Question re Ogden's Roe Sack

I am a small-scale stalker of the three smaller deer species over flat agricultural land. I very rarely take more than one deer per outing.

I never have to carry a deer more than about one mile.

I currently use a Napier Apex Predator waist pack for carcase recovery; I find this convenient, and I like that it doesn't interfere with any of my other kit, e.g. my Sako 85 carried muzzle-up on a Z-Aim sling, and my Kuiu binocular chest pack.

After wrestling yet again yesterday to origami a Clydesdale-sized roe doe into the Napier (and busting one of the zips on an accessory pocket...), I realised that it was not the optimum for my purposes and was going home, and that I needed a replacement.

My question: The Ogden's roe sacks - Standard and Compact models - seem to attract rave reviews from people who know what they're talking about. To those who own and use them, which would suit me better? I'm leaning towards the larger, Standard, model simply for ease of getting beast into bag, but I'm concerned that it might clash with the Z-Aim or the bino chest rig.

Your thoughts, please.

PS: I've watched two or three YouTube videos on the items, including Ogden's own one, but they don't clearly show the answer to my questions.

I use the Roe sack from Monarch, pretty well identical to the Ogdens. (Rather than the larger Sika sack)

I've had 2 Roe bucks in it comfortably many times (gralloched, head and legs off).

It's a very well made and thought out thing.

I find it doesn't interfere with my bino harness or the Deer central sling I use on my rifles, which clips across the chest. May have to just lengthen that strap a wee bit.

There's a clip on the shoulder strap of the sack that your rifle sling clips into,so it would stop any bounce of the rifle when marching back to the vehicle, and I didn't experience any dicomfort with my binos when full.I had the standard roe sack for a number of years and have had sika and roe in there no problem. They are very well made and will last a very long time, and are comfortable when on the back with a deer inside.
You can see the clip I mean in the pic.

I have the sika sack and it’s a good piece of kit.
The only gripe I have is that the back length or shoulder strap length is a little short (not unwearable but not perfect for me) meaning that to get the weight on your hips you run out of shoulder strap adjustment - another inch or two in the back would solve this.
Other gripe is that there is no way to hang the inner back up to drain after washing without adding a loop or eyelet into it (I have separated the inner from the outer bag as they come connected via a draw cord).

Other than that, I have had 40+ kg of deer in it and been just fine carrying it plus rifle and sticks over arable ground.
Good sized pockets and it closes up nice and neat when empty.

As for binos - I have a vortex pouch which sits on top of the sack’s shoulder an chest straps and I don’t have an issue with slings, but I don’t use the sling clip - just a bit too faffy!!

I too used the Predator for years. I found it was easier to use without the liner, and just wash it each time. It eventually fell apart though. Understandable given the abuse I gave it. I now use the Monarch roe sack with a sling clip, and find it absolutely superb

Started off with the Apex belt and while ok, you tend to carry too much in it and it rides down, constantly needing adjusting. As you mention, it also has limited carrying capacity.

Have used the compact roe sack for a good while now and couldn’t be without it - actually have two in rotation as I back to back at the tail end of the week.

The compact has a decent belt with a rubberised backing to reduce slipping - you can also get additional braces for them too.

Personally I never considered the standard as thought it might be a bit flappy in the wind or going through thicket.

Essentially both will be brilliant and very well made. I wouldn’t be concerned about size as there is very little in it.

If you’re used to a belt, go for the compact. Can hold one decent fallow or one roe and two CWD or four munties if your creative. 😄

Hi I’ve a Ogden previous model Sika Sack and had it may be 9 yrs and you won’t find a better made using British materials that Phil used could get two roe in it no problem
Have the roe sack if it the odd beast

I have the roe and the compact.
The roe sack buttons into a third of the width when empty and no issue with bino pouch. Put the bino pouch on first. I don’t have a z aim but have managed with a sling on the rifle, either slip it over my head, barrel pointing down, as I am just extracting and not planning to shoot again.
The compact is basically, 2 bags. The one you strap to your waist and the large pouch has another carrier inside that you remove, it has separate straps and will also to take your deer.
I tend to use the compact more in the summer.
If I was to just use one, it would probably be the compact. Just slightly easier for clipping to high seats. If I needed to carry my sandwiches as well, then the roe sack.
Both are really good, both hold roe in comfortably.

Get the compact. Sounds perfect for your needs. I only shoot fallow generally and other than the real big bucks I’ve fitted everything else in. Had a 55kg buck in it the other month… not ideal for my back but the bag handled it 👍

Good point regarding a hanging tab or eyelet on the liners - will look at feasibility of this modification :tiphat:

I will be sewing a small piece of paracord onto one corner so that I can hang mine, but a sealed eyelet would be better.

As for the back length/ shoulder strap and webbing length, if you extended either by 50-75mm then it would fit perfectly.
It’s fine empty, but I have a big frame so the shoulder straps are extended just to get over my shoulders, leaving the waist belt a little short when it’s loaded up.
just means I am carrying more weight on my shoulders than on my hips, which isn’t ideal.
I’m not even that tall - just about 6ft, but with a prop like stature!!

Maybe make an XL model for chunky buggers like me?
