R93 semi weight 19mm barrel

Dear all, after some advice...options/ suggestions

I bought an R93 barrel which is in a fantastic condition under the impression that it was a flutted standard 17mm wide barrel but it turned out to be 19mm varmint flutted barrel.
I don't wish to "open-up" my exciting wooden stock.

One option is to sell the barrel and look for another or another whole gun.
Another is to find a stock and was wondering if the professional stock would take this size barrel...

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts

I’d have thought that if you open up your wooden stock carefully with sand/glasspaper wrapped around a suitable diameter form and you won’t even notice the extra 1mm each side of the barrel

Professional stocks were opened up to semi- weight and match profiles in the R93. Some had a stiffening compound added.
Yes I've seen a few, mostly well done, but IMO definitely not a DIY option at home with a bit of wood and some sandpaper though :)

You say that, but I recently did just that to my synthetic Mauser MO3 stock. This came after a call to Mauser UK to enquire if they offered such a service and how much it was - ‘yes, we can do that Sir, it will cost £250’.
A piece of 1”/25mm dowel and some fine wet and dry soon had it sorted out, and for a lot less than £250.
I went at it carefully, took time to ensure the sanding was even throughout the stock recess and kept measuring so I didn’t do more than was required. I was pleased with the end result, and I’ve been accused of being OCD about these things in the past.

So, is the consensus to keep the barrel and modify the stock? ...I understand it is achievable but a little concerned ...will also need a different mod

It’s a matter for you - all I’m saying is that it is possible to open up your existing stock to fit the 19mm barrel.

It isn’t a difficult task, but it is one that you should take time and care with.

your barrel is semi weight, not varmint. varmint are 22mm. when Open Season were importing them they offered the barrel channels in the 3 relevant sizes, the base stock being the same for all of them, so its perfectly feasible for an offroad or professional R93 stock to take any weight of barrel without any issues.

I understand you don’t want to sully a wooden stock of that grade. I totally get that.
I too like the look of wood - but the practicalities of a synthetic stock overcome my liking.

On a top end rifle barrel channel/barrel fit is pretty important imho.
Weird gaps, crookedness, rounding out of the top etc look hideous and are right in your face every time you look down in your high seat.
Get a professional to fit, a decent professional at that

Do you know of anyone in the (far) South west? Or I just (reluctantly) sell the barrel and back to the drawing board ..

I’m sorry I don’t. MA Rainback have a very good reputation in Dorset.

Will you want to use a standard barrel in the stock? If so that might look a bit meh.

That was my "issue"...keep the barrel may equate messing up the stock. Sell the barrel and "risk" ending up with one which may not be as clean....

Swillington Shooting Supplies "opened up" my R93 Synth stock from .270 to 300WM about 8 years ago, maybe they could assist ?
That was for the 22mm fluted match barrel.

Thank you. I put the barrel up for sale...but I am ambivalent if I should keep or sell... maybe keep and source another stock/ action 🤷‍♀️

My R93 was/is a full left hand spec, stock, straight pull & magnum bolt etc. with all the extra cost southpaw Blaser oufits require so I was determined to keep it, in this respect SSS did me a great favour !
