Rabbit licence for pet owners

Rabbits are severely neglected, seriously I love rabbits! want too raise them for food eventually as there easy keepers too a degree.

Breeders for years have attempted too find the best habitat for rabbits at the end, of it properly spaced gauged wire flooring and proper formulated pellet food ended up being the best thing too keep them healthy, Except the bunny huggers dont believe that and believe In keeping them in sawdust hutches where there own feet get acid scalded from the ammonia build up, and get GI stasis from being fed huge amounts of high moisture food and absurd amounts of hay

Rabbit feet are meant too be under constant use sawdust bedding does not achieve that, whilst unsightly the correct gauge of wire utilised for flooring uses those muscles whilst keeping the feet dried.

Rabbits lack paw pads they only have hairy feet If there genetic nightmares (most pets are) the hair density is one of the first things that suffer so acid scald ends up even more common! Most people feed hay too keep teeth worn down in pet rabbits... also a genetic issue..... they end up having such a severe mix of dry & wet going through there system It ****s them up severely.

Worked with a Polish lad Kamelle ,his grandad reared those massive European rabbits for food about dog sized .
They didn't mention any license/regulations for these in Poland .
Yes a lot of pets live horrible lives because people are stupid ,so regulation would hopefully improve their lot in life .
And hopefully deter those without a clue.

personally I think it’s a load of bollocks reason being is the biggest issue with pets like Rabbits or Guinea pigs is they are often outside and therefore subject to going un-noticed so

I think what’s needed is a ban list not a register, it’s my strong opinion that any abuser of animals should be absolutely barred for life. Not allowed to own ever again not even after 50years, if you’ll abuse an animal or are neglecting them you have no business owning them

Problem Is though for these species even the people inflicting the law are otherwise relatively unaware of the correct environment the species should be in, especially in regards too "exotic species"

Same could be said with cats and dogs too, far too many people let there cats roam outdoors because Its normalized and wouldn't get you in trouble yet Its by no means within the best interest of the animal, and way way too many behaviouly unsound dogs arent destroyed because until they bite someone outside the family and cause a fuss, there's no legal obligation to do so.

A lot of animal care too be totally honest Is grabbed and ripped from a particular study and or article and people go with it rabbits actually are particularly notorious in this case, a study from the 1980s Is where most of the care information comes from despite being disproven decades ago by breeders hundreds of thousands of rabbits have died because the misinformation.

Rabbit drama Is something I find neat, as expected!....

Would generally be in favour of some sort of license/deposit scheme. Some barrier of entry for most dog owners even, esp in urban areas. Covid was a disaster for unwanted pets..another of the variables TPTB did not foresee nor care for.

As for the puppy farmers....

For us Covid was the perfect time to get a dog, had always wanted one (Golden Retriever) wouldn’t be without her but the lockdown offered us a chance to get her and get thru the puppy phase.
But yeh the amount of post covid pet abandonment is crazy, I remember contacting a few folks about dogs etc n was really clear there was puppy farming. One place we called not too far from us had an ad for Goldens so phoned going to ask all the ?questions like history, health etc parents then told “Sold” them but I have a cavapoo pups, I have shitzu pups and golden doodle pups
Safe to say reported to Police and a few months later the news that said seller of dogs was arrested and up in court for puppy farming

Who knows what the correct answer is but your right in that those who present the law will no doubt know cock all

But I think asides from anything though we need to have Ban Registers, like the Puppy farmer we stumbled on when looking for a pup. She should have zero ability to ever own any animal ever again and when it was concluded her court appearance the reports of the animals and welfare was disgusting

I think that’s what’s needed personally, this country has too big a habit of licensing and registering and legislating absolutely everything. No I think we need Ban lists and that’s all, otherwise there should just be a law written that if your found to be uncaring for animals etc or abusing them then your prosecuted

I presume that the Welsh government has solved all of the principality’s other problems, e.g. crime, housing, infrastructure etc.?

There are already countless laws, rules and agencies covering animal welfare. Making something “double extra illegal with knobs on” solves nothing, it merely creates another tier of bureaucracy and another class of expensive lanyard-wearers.

And do we really think that persons incapable of looking after pets of any description are the types who wanna go on courses………
Echo what cjm1066 has already said………legislation is already in place - the muppets in charge just aren’t aware🙄

There's existing legislation.

Creating more is a restriction on the law abiding and a further loss of freedoms.

For something like rabbits, it's basically not going to be feasible to control as anyone can breed them and start a black market for non licenced persons.

WRT puppy farming - controversial view but if the welfare is held to a certain standard, how would it be different from any other farming?

It would be easier to move to a positive list for what animals can be kept as pets. Mine is quite short: dog, cat, guinea pig, some small rodents. This is based on how likely the average person is to provide the proper husbandry and welfare conditions for the animals. With an additional aspect of how the pets are sourced from wild populations.

With respect, I think that the type of people keeping some of the more interesting small pets, such as small reptiles, are more likely to do their research and provide proper care than someone who opts for an "easy" common pet such as rabbit or guinea pig.
My sister, a vet and practice owner specialising in very small pets and exotics, sees firsthand the lengths that her clients are prepared to go to to provide proper care for their exotic pets, whereas rabbits are often neglected in a hutch at the bottom of the garden.

And as some have already pointed out above, we already have animal welfare legislation. It just needs to be enforced.

Dogs I think are a different matter altogether. Personally, I think nobody should be allowed to keep a dog unless they've got access to enough private land to excercise it on, either land that they own or by having permission from a landowner. There is no reason why people should expect to be able to take a dog with them wherever they go in public places. But I know that my opinion isn't a popular one!

I know what you mean. I am coming at this with the view that most pets are kept as objects of control, that some humans get pleasure from keeping another creature captive. Dog and Cat have been selectively bred for this and have fewer welfare problems as a consequence. I could go more extreme and not have cats on the list due to the wildlife harm they do. I'd certainly support a "No cats on small islands" policy.
