Rabbits

Anyone else noticing a plague of rabbits this year?

I’ve just shot the 60th and that’s just around the poultry sheds, don’t get me wrong great fun with the 410 and air rifle but it’s getting bloody ridiculous!

plus I’ve seen little or no mixy this year.

Been shooting the farm for 10 years and regular culling has created a healthy colony
50 a week at the moment ( just shoot the one evening 7pm to 30 mins or so after dark) but I kept away last year so increased numbers was expected
No mixi seen yet

Been getting enough to easily feed the dogs, got about three places that are showing through a steady increase

other places haven’t done so well, still down slightly on numbers, a case of keeping a happy level of viable numbers
in areas where they aren’t causing a problem

i would say overall they are on the way back but at a slow pace at the moment

bit off tangent I’ve had some fantastic rat shooting lately, they have definitely not been holding back on breeding, had some cracking nights out with air rifle and Mach 2 past few weeks

Just the opposite up ours.
Regularly shot up to 50 on a mornings walk early on, now down to single figures.
Down to picking what I shoot at now trying to retain a bit sport for the rest of the year.

yep
had the same 2 years ago on 2 permissions , they’ve gradually come back up to there being a few about again

Haven't had rabbits here 5 years or more , just catching an odd glimpse of one now and again this summer . Really missed the rabbit shooting in the off season evennthougn I don't miss everything getting nibbled off within hours of planting

Usually I don’t bother with them, spent too many nights out after them when I was a lot younger and keener, but this year their getting out of hand that’s for sure!

Have a permission with plenty of bunnies but spotted a few with mixi last time out. So that’ll thin them out no doubt. A bit early this year.
hh

They're starting to make a comeback here, too. Been a dearth of them for the last few years, but this year seems to be showing a resurgence of numbers

Some parts of the estate showing large numbers, generally where it's difficult to shoot them so resort to other methods, wasting good meat🤬
VHD about though, some places affected by that. Generally speaking, numbers on the increase.

As the saying goes ‘one swallow doesn’t make a spring’, being an avid rabbit shooter on a couple of permissions I’d love there to be an increase (don’t tell the farmers that🤣) but the long term damage of VHD I think will keep them in check for a number of years :(

Definitely on the increase round here.

I did see a bunny with Myxi while playing golf the other day. It was really far gone, had no idea I was even there. I dispatched it with a quick blow with my 6 iron. Best shot I hit all day.

But yeah, certainly way more young bunnies around on the farm although the cattle are out, so not doing much shooting at the moment. Golf is priority at this time of year but I can see late autumn/winter being busy.

My numbers are right down and crops too high now to see them. Odd ones on tracks. They generally pop up somewhere and I shoot or catch all I can, then the same format in another spot. This has seemed to hold them for the past few years and keeps the farming side happy. I like to fill a freezer with them harvest time, all three parts grown. Ten years ago the problem was massive but reduced by heavy trapping.

Numbers are up so I'm on the case now
No sign of mixi or vhd yet " strange how after so meny years rabbits have never built up a resistance to either vhd or mixi to any great extent ?? .
So will the same apply to our covid 19 makes me wonder .... 🤔.

Numbers seem to be rising here, and seeing rabbits on ground where I don't remember there ever being rabbits before. Although on a piece of ground, which is 2 miles from the farm, and is in spring barley, numbers seem to have reduced quite a bit since last year.

Worst year for me in a few years, they were nicley building for about the last 4 or 5 years but this year there are very little about in most places, except that is for one womens garden who seems to think im her on call rabbit man after the farmer gave her my number and doesnt even offer me a cup of tea when i sit out for her!

Those of you with an excess, - please send some our way. :thumb:
A definite decline at our local permissions, when compared to a year or two ago. 😕

The population where I am never seems to have recovered from VHD. You might see a bit of a recovery from time to time but then it seems to get clobbered by VHD again and you're back to little or nothing. I haven't seen any signs of myxi recently but I wonder whether that is those that might have it get taken out by VHD before the myxi can fully develop.

It's a real shame as I both like seeing and shooting rabbits. Like many, rabbits were my entry point to shooting and stalking.
