Rabbitting

Love rabbit shooting but like many others’ permissions have been devastated by man-made Frankenstein plagues. Onebplace is coming back though the horsey owners have zero tolerance so they gotta go (the rabbits not the owner).
The .17hmr is a superb rabbiting tool but since I rediscovered the humble .22lr and CCI subs it stays in the safe….

I went out tonight after supper, just because it was a lovely evening and partly to help kick off this thread. Arrived just after sunset, 2030 and shot for an hour. Accounted for 16 rabbits but only picked 11 but they are only going for fix bait with it being a Sunday. Was good fun, I didn’t work the dogs onto retrieves in adjacent fields but allowed them to sweep up at the end. First rabbit was a black one.

Would have had more with better glass. The Hawke struggled again, had to get dark to use the Pard.

You don’t need to wait until dark for the Pard - in IR mode but with the IR turned off you might be pleasantly surprised what you can see…

Not shooting, but a February ferreting trip where I started my two daughters and a friend's daughter. They're now mad keen! Sadly, this was an invite that entailed a 500 mile round trip. Finding rabbits closer to home (Monmouthshire) to keep them at it is proving difficult.

Horse place for a couple of hours this afternoon but cover was a bit out of hand.
Haven't had the .17hmr out for ages and had forgotten how sweet it is and furthest would have been just over the 160m mark.Decked 27 and the usual good few had kicked doon the holes but a good bit of shooting.

How many people use the rabbits they harvest as opposed to just reducing the numbers for the land owners?
The few places I shoot rabbits (VHD has done its damage) all go to a local butcher buts its easy since the max I shoot will be 15-20 if I go around 3 or 4 farms. Like all things if I can avoid wasting something that can be eaten I will 👍

I give my pigeons to my friend and he gives me rabbit burgers (having them tonight) he has ferrets so they get some pigeon to mix up their diet.
Dad loved rabbit casserole (think he liked cooking it as he fussed over it all day lol) 2 saddles 4 back legs covered with mash... ;)

I use the rabbits in a casserole "Old Fashioned Rabbit Stew"

It is absolutely delicious and very filling. When I've shot pigeons, I just use the breasts, fried with streaky rashers again delicious.

Really good to see, educating children on real life outside the 5" screen!

if you work out a rabbit eats a bale of hay in 8 months in one week 120 rabbits would cost the farmer in lost revenue £100 or more

We had the 4wd lurchers on the shoot other night drive through a pea field 🤷‍♂️
Why a don’t know used lurchers back in the day never new we had visited
So farmer asked if can thin them out to be fair there is a lot on the ground a don’t like shooting them especially this time of year
So poor hares pays the price of the bell ends in 4wd sad end but the ferrets enjoy them & av never been able to cook them

Soon as harvest is done it will be the same for them on some of my ground. If you leave them it brings the trash in that smash gates , drive through hedges and ruin crop.
