As the cost of BFG muds is now decidedly north of £200 a corner, I’m looking at other options - which are limited in 18” sizes. One that does come up is Radar Renegade RT+

Has anyone got any real world experience please?

I have a good friend that uses them.on his Hilux.
He prefers them to the cooper at3 as they are better grip. But they don't last as long. Roughly half the mileage.
But the at3 was a good tyre.
He tried bfg ATS now. He doesn't like them. He will go back to renegades.
I don't like the bfgs as they are like driving ice on a road. Which I know it's not their job. But I've had a couple of bad slides not driving hard.
He does tree work so a mix of road and proper off road. His truck is lifted with snorkel and likes to try it out. I certainly wouldn't take mine where he goes.

I just asked, he got 18k out of both sets.

Ouch - 18k not a lot for a tyre like that. But then soft rubber gives better grip than hard rubber on cold, wet UK roads so it’s all a compromise. And they’re £130 each rather than £230 for BFG!

I’ve had about 30k out of some Kumho MT51 and they’re still very legal (but not as effective off road as they were). Can’t find them anywhere and last time I spoke to Kumho they had no date for getting stock into the UK.

I brought Maxis Worm Drive for my D-Max also luckily found an as new set of rims on ebay

So have the ones it came with which had done 15k for the summer and 5mins a corner to swap them over.

They were 108 each looking like a BFG paten, lots of lads have said what a nice paten also pleased with the performance.

A farmer curses each time he sees them as he was wrong footed on a new buy as they put a crap set on in the deal lol They have gone up but v pleased with them

I had the same dilemma when pricing up BFG MT 18 months/2 years ago with a similar quote to yourself around £230 each!
I ended up with Maxxis Bighorn MT instead they cost £500 for 4 fitted and I have to say have been every bit as good as the BFG.
Mine were 31x10.5R15's but I'm sure they do 18" too. Certainly worth a look if like me you must have Mud Terrains.

I’ve got Radar Renegade R7 M/T on my shogun and can’t fault them, thought they were going to be noisy on the road but hardly anything, the behave on wet tarmac as well which surprised me, plus can’t fault them off road 2264311F-57CD-4AFB-BC18-AC7658E98922.webp

Screenshot_20220523-220253_WhatsApp.jpgme , great for offroad, rocky terrain. Can be a bit slippy in the wet but i expect that in the pickup anyways..dont notice the road noise as i have a roof rack which is pretty noisy

I have them on my ranger brilliant off road bit noisy on have had 20k out of the and shou get double that looking at the tread that’s left would definitely buy again

Well I’ve been running a set for a couple of thousand miles now and got to saw I’m pretty unimpressed. I’ve run mud terrains for 10s of thousands of miles over the years and these are the least impressive on the road I’ve used. Good off-road but that’s to be expected.

My pickup had done about 40k on Kumho MT51 from new and straight onto these so it wasn’t like I was going from road tyres. Back end is ok (for a pickup!) but the steering is twitchy and unpredictable in the wet. It’s the unpredictable bit I don’t like and certainly doesn’t inspire confidence.

Cheap(er) option but won’t put them on again.

If you want some well mannered MT tyres, have a look at the Cooper STT PRO'S. I switched to these after the ST MAXX be amended unavailable in the UK and they're great in all weather's and conditions.
Edit: I got over 50k miles on the ST MAXX's, they still had 4mm tread on when I got these.

I’ve ran Cooper ST Maxx Tyres for the last 15 years. The best all round off road tyre I’ve used. I still run them on my current Range Rover Sport.

Another follow up on these Radar tyres after 3 years use - wow, time flies!!

They still have loads of life left in them - I'd guess at 6mm of tread and I've done about 30k on them but performance in the wet has suddenly dropped off a cliff. We've hardly seen a shower all summer but since it's got a bit wetter I've really started to notice some unpredictable understeer in the rain. They were never amazing to start with but I had a run up to Scotland in the rain yesterday and my word, was that a scary experience! It was like driving on black ice and they are getting changed Monday. Unpredictable understeer at slow speeds on roundabouts and I had to put it in 4WD on a steepish climb on the A68 to stop the back end overtaking me. Never been so relieved to get home in one piece!

I just looked and price has gone up now too - £150 each. Far better options out there for that money in my opinion.
