RE land rover defender demise

Now wouldn't you think this is the D's B's and a smart truck. That's where it ends i bought this Defender 110 Utility top of the range XS model late 2009. It arrived with 13 faults from the factory on the way home less than 40 minutes i was pulled over by dibble as the stop lights had failed to work (checked prior to leaving dealership) i was lucky as he let me off. I contacted the dealership who stated that they could not have it back in for rectification for two weeks. To cut a long story short i had it for 2 years when i decide to sack it as Landrover had the 110 for six months of the 2 years trying to rectify the faults the last time it went back to the dealership it had 28 faults some were original faults still trying to be rectified. Leaking in water, leaking differentials, flaking/blistering paintwork, corrosion in the body just to mention a few of the problems. One of the dealership employees had the bad manners to say i had bought Defender thay are crap so what do you expect. So for me they will not be missed. I have replaced the Defender with a Hilux Invincible and this is a far superior vehicle than any Defender. The Hilux has just had it's first service and i just get into it and drive it and it goes everywhere the landy went.

Dry your eyes and get a Toyota, like most sensible former Landrover users have done. Shows what happens when you fail to move with the times.
 
What's that old Aussie saying ,if you want to go out in the bush take a landrover...if you want to get back as well take a landcruiser....Wont bother me a jot , noisy , cold , unreliable ,thirsty & the list goes on ..having had 5 of the things ,the last one breaking down on the A9 , leaving me & mate to spend a very cold night in a layby to await recovery , completely messing up a stalking trip , they were given the boot for ever ......TOYOTA sadly is the way forward .

The Jap trucks will have been worked to death. As the Land Rover spends most of its time on the hoist/ramp it will have done hardly any work after 10 years.

That's true i have a 1972 Series 3 tax exempt and it has only done 103k miles in 41 years and cost me a bomb to keep on the road. I now wish that i had sold it and bought a Suzuki Jimny as a lamping vehicle. If you look arround there are numerous old Jap 4x4's about. I also drove Disco's but they were just as bad. Landrover are living on a name they aquired prior to Japanese competition.

I can drive my Defender into any LR dealership tomorrow and get £5,000 less than i paid for it new 4 years ago so beat that Hirohito??
All Jap pickups have leaf springs and drum brakes on the rear.... Absolute tosh for soft ground.
Seen a film on youtube of a D4 dancing rings around a T Landcruised in sand dunes. It was useless so don't kid yourself that Toyboatas are better. A Series 1 will drive past anything built today.

Red Dot i recall one of you comments as calling Toyota Hilux as RICE CARTS but when picking up last season a 110 Defender got bogged down and what drove arround it and TOWED IT OUT it was yes a HILUX the same as mine. Hilux also holds it's price. :lol:

Must have been a soft area that the Toyota didnt enter.. We all use long ropes??

No Red Dot the Hilux was right behind the Landy in the same tracks when the Landy got stuck the Hilux reversed out and arround the landy and attached a short rope as it was the only one available. As for leaf springs the old Series had them and having had both there was nothing better in the new Defender than my 1972 Series 3.

Its a bought time the things are one load of S---T not worth a toss and that comes from a land rover dealer and mate don't take one if your getting it for nothing it will bleed you dry you have been warned:british:
 
Had a Series I and a Series III.

They were a giant Meccano set, which was great, but they needed to be as there was always something that needed fixing.

At last year's ploughing match I was in my Shogun and had to tow a Series IIA that had broken down on the approach road. Probably would have cost pennies to fix, but that doesn't matter when you're stuck by the side of the road. It reminded me of the bad times.

Land Rover's off-road ability is legendary......if it can get there.

The series 11 dash made a superb bottle opener,racking my brains since the start of this thread for something good to say about Landrover I got there eventually:thumb:
 
Ok my old Disco has a smokey engine, its done well over 250,000 miles and the original one, yesterday I bought another lower mileage engine for £180.


how much would a nissan/toyota etc cost when they go bang at 80,000 miles
 
So the defender is going to go! Hmmmmmmmmmm? I wonder what the services will use for getting about in?

I know our friends in Hereford have been using Japanese king cab 4x4's for getting around the UK in for some time, will the rest follow suit. If so I think it is a bit sad.

I used to shoot with one of the former directors of Landrover, Clive Bevan, I used to ask him why they didn't bring the Defender up to date and he told me they were going to. Then the last "new" one came out, and you still needed to buy a lift kit for the seat to get it to go back over the lowered bulk head:banghead: So stupid!

But what of the four wheel drive clubs? What are they going to use for the really sticky stuff? And let's be fair, when you go to an AWD club event what is going to win? Answer = A landrover! Although it may be a derivative. Yes there will be small stuff like jimnys' about, some have won the rock crawling competitions, but what about the rest? Mainly landrovers on the winning podium. So are we going to find that someone like Bowler will base their vehicles on japanese stuff? Somehow i doubt it, there have been plenty of them to use over the past 10 years and yet Bowler still use the Landrover as the basis for all their gear. What else is there so good in the sticky stuff?

So I wonder what will come next?

Please!!! I accept many of the valid points on the Landy, however shod with the same tyres I would put my HOUSE on the Defender off road against an Hilux!! For all its bad points, its Off road ability is simply 2nd to none (PS; I owned a Hilux for 3yr, went back to the Landy, for its off-road capability and its quirky nature that You learn to live with, much like the Wife :)
 
Guy near me has a '72 Land Cruiser soft top. But they don't last these rice carts! :stir::-D A Jimny on good tyres will get in and out of quite a few sticky spots and start in the morning.
