Recommend me a light weight stalking jacket

Good morning chaps, as per title, I am after a light weight camo stalking jacket for summer stalking.

My old Deer Hunter light weight has now come to the end of its long and hard life. Looking for a breathable, durable, simple, comfortable, shower proof camo coat with no need for a thousand features and pockets.

I am 2XL so if anyone knows where such a coat might be secured at a good price, please let me know.

I would buy an older British Army DPM smock ideally in gabardine if you can find one.

Austrian M65 military surplus jacket is really good. I just had to resew the pocket liners on mine as they weren't very strong.

Honestly, just buy a surplus Army smock on eBay. Spray it with Fabsil and it will be very water resistant.

Wear mine all the time. Wore it 20 minutes ago, that’s how shjite the weather is!

One of the best jackets made, but warm, definitely not a light overcoat. With a fleece it will do -15

I use the older DPM version which is showing no sign of wearing out after years of use.

I agree with those above on current British Army MTP smock, I use it year round unless very wet or cold, layer it up or down, windproof, shower resistant, does have lots of pockets, so car keys, thin warm gloves, gralloch gloves, licence, magazine, spare round pouch, etc. Very good jacket.

Keeping the same theme of using a British Army smock for summer use i have a normal sized fit for that purpose and (as they are so cheap to buy) a larger size for my top layer for Winter use to accommodate the appropriate number of under layers.

How quiet do you find the fabric for moving through scrub? I do some close range rabbit stalking and was wanting something light and silent.

I am mostly stationery or if moving, not in scrub, so not a big issue for me but there will be quieter fabrics..

I have a M65 jacket I bought a couple of years ago brand new. Found out the size 104/108 was over big for me so got a smaller one.
So this bigger one is available if you are interested
Research the sizings as military stuff has odd terminology and despite a supposed national standard it isn't.

The GoreTex jackets whilst very good can be a little bit noisy for stalking. Best used only in proper downpours when the noise of the rain dampens the noise down. If you get the older model they have good pockets, a good hood and are very tough.

Ive never been a fan of goretex, as you say it is quite loud and “rustles”. I also tend to get very sweaty wearing it

Proper GoreTex is still (in my view) the best of the breathable waterproof fabrics. I’ve got a Musto Highland Game Jacket 20+ years old that doesn’t leak at all. Washing tends to destroy them especially if the instructions aren’t followed properly delaminating seam tape and blocking the GoreTex with stuff like fabric softener which in turn compromise breathability. Higher end stalking jackets will often have a GoreTex drop liner under a quiet outer layer. This approach is too bulky for military use and doesn’t fit the layering system used in most militaries. Shell jackets are good for when it’s hey moving it down only.

The old British SAS smocks made of ventile; a spun cotton which yarn expands when wet to close the holes in the fabric making it showerproof are as good as I have ever found. I like a zip full length on the front - makes no more noise than an over the head smock, and a hood for occasional use, but it can be opened up when you have to drag any distance and you can let the "steam" out! [Remember soldiers sweat, ladies perspire but officers simply glow.] If you can find one in rip-stop ventile then even better.
Failing this then the standard British military smock (with or without its lining as you wish) is probably the next best. I have had German, Austrian and French smocks but never any of the Scandinavian ones. The advantage of UK s exWD stuff is that generally it is cheaper than anything else.
