recommend non waterproof trousers

I'm after recommendations for new stalking trousers that aren't waterproof. I have waterproof trousers that are fine but I need new trousers for when it's dry and don't want to sweat unnecessarily. I usually wear gaiters so wet grass etc isn't an issue. I'm after something hard wearing, maybe a heavy canvas or similar and in a cargo style for the pockets, maybe extra protection in the knees and seat area? Everything that looks good to start with then turns out to have a waterproof or resistant membrane in it and whilst they say they're breathable they're not the same as just wearing combat trousers or similar.

What do people recommend?

I use German army cargo type trousers, just remember to sew up the little vent holes in the crotch ... bleddy midge heaven.

I G-wax the double knees and seat on mine to stay dry when crawling/sitting.

Take a look at what is available army surplus, shop well and you'll get decent trousers for a few quid rather than paying a fortune for what is, basically, the same thing but with big adverts in some shooting magazine.

With so many different versions from so many different countries you will try pretty hard to have a requirement that the surplus market can't meet.

I recommend the legacy stalkers trousers from Fortis - available with or without a waterproof liner. I have the non-waterproof version and have been using them for the since January. They are certainly tough and hard waring. They are a bit noise at the moment but I'm confident that they will loosen up with a few washes. I've been out in the snow and rain in them and they are water resistant.

thanks for the suggestions and PMs. Looks like the Fjallraven get a lot of good recommendations. I've tried a lot of the milsurp stuff in the past but I don't want anything ripstop or noisy and moSt the European gear is very short in the leg.

Did you find that the colour faded from them? I have two pairs and the colour faded from them rapidly.

Use ex army lightweight cargo pants £10 a set no rustle rustle ,loads of pockets and not too sweaty pig.Rip them get a new pair .Usually bought from local markets atb

As I don't like paying over the odds for big name clothing that gets heavily used, I'm a big fan of army surplus clothing for most things stalking, the olive fatigues are cheap and reasonably hard wearing for summer use. Having said that, Ive got a pair of solognac (a french outdoor outfitters) inverness trousers which are tough as old boots, like a jeans type denim. very comfy.

I have some Solognac bits already and have been impressed with the quality and price and thone Inverness trousers look ideal. The Fjallraven looked very nice but almost 3 times the price and because they're water resistant my concern is they'll be a bit too hot when on the move. Thanks to all who replied.

I have the Inverness 500 trousers, which are great for the money, but they are waterproof. I think others may be less so but still have a membrane. There'll be many completely non-waterproof trousers from that supplier (decathlon) though.

ridgeline or Hunters element green fleece pants,they come with the dry arse liner for sitting on a wet log or whatever.
They repel water but most of all they are as silent as whatever is made.
Any of the drill type pants are terrible.
I have had some Euro hunters come stay and while they wear the best nordic stuff it is so phucking noisy for stalking.

Craighooper Kiwi trousers for me hard wearing light quick drying and as they aren't stalking related but mountaineering trousers sensibly priced.
