Yes, I passed without having done any stalking. I think that is the idea of the DSC1 ie an introduction to stalking. The DSC2 seems, to me at any rate, to be the follow on qualification ie practical experience of stalking.
Does it need to be done? Horses for courses. I wanted a good background knowledge of the subject before taking the sport up properly. I had been offered the chance of stalking reds in Dec this year without taking the DSC1, but I felt it would be disrespectful to the host to turn up with not the slightest idea what I was doing.
In my case, I would say yes, it did need to be done. In other cases it would be up to the individual to decide.
I do think that any training that can be taken is of benefit even if only to prove you want to learn more about the subject and were willing to take time out to learn.
I know some places now insist on a DSC1 (a couple of chaps on my course were experienced stalkers who were required to have the qualification to continue stalking on the land they leased), and I also know that every person on the course learned something new. The 2 days spent listening to the instructor was worth the fee alone.
hope this helps you in your decision
