Started reloading last October.. .223..all fine..just followed the instructions in the manuals and on here. Now reloading for .243 and want to take it a bit further. I have ordered a modified case and I’ll establish COL to touch the lands. i want to try establish the best load for my Heym SR20, 1:10 twist, N140 with 87gr V-Max. I intend to start 20thou off the lands…unless you have other advice…..N140 is min 31.6 & max 36.3…..i thought I would start with 5 rounds each at 33.5, 34 & 34.5….any thoughts??

Loading close to the lands has often been seen as a recipe for accuracy. However, throat erosion means the jump increases proportionally faster for "close to the lands" than shorter rounds which have more jump to begin with.

Does it matter? Probably not for hunting. However, if you can find an accurate load with a lot of jump (100thou, for eg.) it will be be more forgiving over the life of the barrel.

Some bullet designs are more "jump tolerant" than others (hybrid ogive styles much better than true VLD designs in this respect.)

May be worth starting with more jump and only going closer if you are struggling.

Or, depending on your accuracy needs, just load to SAAMI spec and don't worry about it!

Thanks for the information….I am not into long range target shooting..as long as I can take out a fox out to 150yds or so I’ll be happy…just enjoying learning the reloading process.

Should have put that money into components. As I like to point out, the finest factory Match ammunition is not loaded to a particular distance from anybody's lands. ~Muir
Quite right..however….I reload all my centre fire ammunition now…and i want to try seating depth rather than C.O.L just for the fun of it.👍
