Hi chaps, I've recently started a new series on my channel fore newbie reloaders from the perspective of someone who is a relative newbie myself. Been shooting over 30 odd years and used to reload a ton of 9mm and .38 pre '97 but recently returned to reloading rifle calibres as I started shooting greater volumes than just stalking.

The level of precision needed is way higher for rifle ammo. I used to shoot police pistol, service pistol and a little IPSC back in the day and was loading big volume comparatively. I didn’t spend anywhere near the time measuring or thinking about neck tension and seating depth etc. Groups at 25y were smaller than the x ring off a rest and ran the relevant power factor for class. Cast lead bullets made from reclaimed lead at the range.

So did I back in the good old days, and I like to think I took as much care to make quality ammunition for pistols as for the rifles i loaded back then and now. F class shooters may need to drill down to the absolute best accuracy possible with an F class rifle likely for most sporting purposes 1moa will get the job done.

Good blag Lloyd or rather very generous of Edgar Brothers to provide the Hornady reloading kit. :)

Any chance you can get them to also provide you with one of the new Hornady Versa-Prime bench priming tools. It looks like an interesting bit of kit and I would like to see a review of one. :tiphat:

I’ve asked when they will have one, I’m more than happy to buy stuff, they offered me the kit. I never make a call with the intention of blagging kit, if they offer that’s cool but I would hate to be the kind of person who thinks they are entitled to free stuff because they are an “influencer” I hate that term an the attitude of many who claim it.
 
Good on ya mate, I wish there were a few more that were willing to do the same.

I'm like you, started out reloading for pistol and it looks like we shot the same disciplines. Yes I was more concerned with quantity at the time but quality came into it too.
When I started reloading rifle there was nobody I knew who reloaded for rifle so I was on my own and found it slightly more daunting especially as the internet wasn't there to help at the time. So I made a few mistakes but I got there eventually.

Much appreciated I stuck a toe in the water a year or more ago with reasonable lack of disaster.
I have a mountain of 308 and 223 factory once fired of various brands .
I will watch these tonight and subscribe. Quick question . How do I tell if as I suspect some of the cases are crimped primers and is it worth dealing with them ? And how to do it .
Magtech and s+b fmj that sort of thing .

If you watch episode 2 I show the head stamp and the primer pocket on a crimped and non crimped case. I tried reaming a few cases but still found I was having problems seating primers. Decided on balance to chuck the once fired brass and will unfired brass for now. I’m sure there’s a way I could have recovered it but I just dont think it’s worth the effort for 200 cases.
 
swanging the crimp out of the primer pocket is the best way to remove it, but like lloyd states new .223 and .308 brass is relatively cheap. Also lookout for berdan primed cases if fired brass acquired, as likely that will break your decamping pin in the die.

Unless you use the Lee universal Decapping die as the pin is held in a collet which just slides the pin up in the collet without breaking the pin, BTW you can sense there is a Berdan primer there as when you apply leverage to decap it feels different and that is your warning. I have personal experience of this often as my pal gives me the contents of the brass bucket at his local range, it is amazing what some shooters just throw away after shooting them off.
