Reloading why did i bother ?

And this just demonstrates the ever expanding variables when not actually being the nut behind the rifle in question. By which I mean did your mate first try a group with just the addition of a cheek peice for improved head to scope alignment before adjusting the parallex?

K
Yes he did and it improved it, but adjusting the parallax to 100 improved it a little more.
Like you say there are so many variables to check.
Strange someone who shoots a lot or for a long time that also understands how things work, does all the checks auto, without thinking, eg puts a gun to his shoulder and know instantly if it fits.
Others starting out or long time shooters, just don't get it and struggle unless very lucky.

What does this have to do with reloading?

Apart from that, barrels that need fouling shots after having been thoroughly cleaned are usually heavily pitted.
Not so.
Ken.
Ps. OP says he doesn’t lubricate the barrel after cleaning, that’s not a good idea.
I push a loose patch soaked in Lock Eze through the barrel, then stand it muzzle down until the carrier evaporates.
I don’t think this is a common thing to do, but, I know many shooters in other countries do it.

Just strippng the rifle to clean before putting away and found a third factor...that the insulating tape across the end of the moderator had not blown away clean as it does usually...that could well have explained some of this evening's weirdness. Doncha just love the frustrations of shooting!

Ha! Reminds me of the time when, having unaccountably missed a deer, I was walking down the field to check the shot site just to make sure it was a clean miss and I came across the smoking remnants of my neoprene moderator cover! Must've caught it on a twig or something while climbing highseat in the dark, and not noticed it had pulled forward to project beyond the muzzle.

Interesting. I've lost count of the posts on here that assert there's no advantage to parallex adjustment and that it doesnt play a part in achieving a razor sharp image.

Total rubbish in my opinion, Parallax plays a big part in why a lot of people don't shoot well. Hence the reason why they are good on targets from a bench but miss in the field where the eye is slightly out on the scope.

Admittedly the posts I refer to have been in the context of scopes with fixed parallex at c100 yards but used on 22 rimfires at far less.

Ok guys it's been a while.ive had a bit of a mare with this 3006.ive swapped the t3x with a grs stock.zhad great results with homeloads but as previously posted couldn't group from a cold barrel. Taking all proactive posts into consideration I recheched the forward screw and it tightened further. It wasn't fully located in the recoil lug. 20190827_134315.webp

I did do a completely strip down after a heavy downpour so maybe that was the cause.even so as original post factory ammo is a lot better than it was years ago.

Sorry meant to add I've been reloading this calibre cos I couldn't find any factory ammo at the time that would group under 2 inch.
Then I've just recently found federal that will cloverleaf at 100 .apart from the first 6 shots

Gary
Then you’ve solved the problem...whenever you’ve stalked onto a deer and are ready to shoot, take six quick shots first to warm up the barrel then dispatch your deer!

Well, maybe you should go back to home loading then or find an accurate cartridge, surely ? What is the point in a hunting rifle that won’t shoot accurately on a cold clean Barrel?
Kindest regards, Olaf

The twiddly things on your scope will move you into the 10 ring.

So "the first 6 shots from a cold barrel before it would group" was just random grouping and the 6 shots cold was not actually a consistent pattern?

The Fuller diagnosis banging on about needing quantity of shots in order to get a truer picture of faults in rifle, ammunition and shooter is born out again!

The 4 pages of thread trying to diagnose, does bear out what I posted earlier though...you must give complete answers to all the questions posed to give others a chance to help, even if you could not see the point....we would have got there a lot earlier if you had answered all the questions!

Post #32 specifically asked if you had checked the action to stock fixings...

Glad you have sorted it, and thank you for the follow up resolution...good shooting.

Alan
