Remington 700 throat length

Some time ago I bought a Remington 700 in 17 Rem. Put some factory 20gn V-Max through it 2-3” groups. I’ve reloaded some of the cases with 20gn Nosler Varmageddon and N135 Rem. No 9 primers (bullet seated to 2.150” COL) The loads I shot weren’t great 1-2” groups. Put some 25gn Remington hollowpoint factory loads through it 1’ groups.
Today, thought I’d measure to see where the lands were. Removed the firing pin and ejector, shallow seated a bullet and gently chambered the case. Bolt handle was floppy ie, I was not on the lands. So I removed the case, popped the bolt back in and measured the distance from end of barrell to the bolt face with a cleaning rod (male end). Then I removed the bolt, carefully dropped in a bullet which I gently held in place whilst I inserted the cleaning rod again. The measurement between the two marks, 2.661” That’s a jump for a 2.150 COL bullet of 0.51” The bullets only around 0.55” long???
So my question is, is the throat burnt out or is this just a Remington 700 thing and it’ll be ok?
Cheers

hi bud my remington 700 rem mag has a very long throat and on my tikka t3 204 cant get heads to even get close to the lands but gun shoots very well some guns just come with long throats

Both of my Remington 700's in .308, one nearly 30yrs old, and one only two yrs old, both had very long throats. They were both capable of producing very good groups, sub 1/2 MOA when I did my bit properly!! The elder one of the two has since been re-barreled with a Lothar Walther barrel and the throat is now over 3/32" shorter than it was. I expect your rifle is fine, but if you are worried why don't you get someone with a bore scope to check the throat.
Kind regards M

Yes I did, and it came out very well indeed. I rust blued it, boiling up each time in a milk churn, it did take a while, and maybe, a tad agricultural but I love it!!
