Renault Megane - Good and bad points?

We have had an automatic Kangoo with Petrol engine in the family for 18 years. We took it on when my mother passed away 10 years ago.

one solinoid in gearbox needed replacing. It had sat for he last two years and gummed solid.

and the water pump went four years ago. Other than that nothing other than annual servicing.

changing it for a small Polo as daughter learning to drive and needs a manual. Also as its old technology with higher CO2 it gets expensive fir parking permit in town.

giving it a friends foster son - he is going into Horticulture and needs a first vehicle. It will get him up and running, and Mother in Law will be smiling as she too was a plant breeder / horticulturealist.

Maybe I should explain. We are now thinking of something small and economical to run. I have no need for a 4X4 any more and all the motor will be used for is a "runabout" for shopping etc with the wife so something cheap to run, insure and tax so we are thinking along the lines of something like a Fiesta, Corsa, small Nissan or something like that. It doesn't need to be "sporty" with a 0 - 60 in 5 seconds ;) and with enough room for the wife and me and sometimes the dog, with enough boot space to carry three or four days worth of shopping. The most important thing is that it needs to be reliable and not too expensive to maintain and get serviced!
I should add that I now don't do much more than about 4,000 miles per year (If that) so around 45 MPG minimum would be nice.

Had meganeR26 F1 in my younger days. Was like driving a go cart. Fast and fun. Never had a problem with it apart from a heavy right foot and using break pads and tyres quite often.
o to be young again.

Go get a Kia any which one you fancy all very good and reliable.
I worked in the motor trade for 50 years do not go French Japs ok though.

Frenchie, I would recommend a Hyundai I10 or I20 as all will come with 5 years or whats left from previous owners. Modern ones do 70 to the gallon 50 for the I20, have many gizmos from more expensive vehicles, have reasonable service charges etc. Picking one up second hand would be simple and cheap.
My wife has one I10 - just had an MOT and has 1870 miles on the clock. I have a hyundai Tucson. I have never had anything at all go wrong with any hyundai I have had -
5 up to now. Worth a look on Google, even if you dont buy one.
