Renewal questions

My certificate is due for renewal in just over 4 months.

Certificate is open for a a 308, 6.5 and 2 x 22LRs. Target only for a 303 and a 357 lever action (and target for the open rifles as well).

Here are the questions :)

1. How far ahead should I put in the renewal? With Christmas coming, I was thinking just put the renewal in now, but is 4.5 months ahead too early? I just dropped the medical form at the GP this week.

2. I got the open certificate on the basis of going on occasional paid stalks. I don't have any permanent permission on any land and have never had a permanent permission on land. Do I have to make a booking for another paid stalk in order to show this as a good reason for the renewal? Or will a history of paid stalks be enough?

3. Can I just ask the police to give me an open certificate for all firearms? The 303 and 357 are target only at the moment. Maybe I'd want to hunt grey squirrels with a WW1 303 or something.

Firstly make sure you have enough ammo to tide you over till you're renewal date.
I would send them in within the next couple of weeks
Yes you would do well to provide photocopies of previous stalks/club receipts and future bookings
If these firearms were all in youre possession at last renewal youre new certificate should be open for all calibres so long as you haven't had any incidents previously. Hope this answered youre questions

Get the medical cert back

Put the renewal in, soon with recorded delivery, stock on ammo first (less of an issue if you reload)

I would suggest you need to prove you are still going on paid stalks so unless you have a lot of recent receipts to show it is a regular thing then having a stalk booked is a good idea

Unless you have ground to shoot over it is unlikely they will open all firearms, you could argue the .303 for paid stalks but you'll struggle with the .357 as you have no ground and no guide is going to let you stalk with a .357. Although the guidance states that there is no need to prove good reason for additional quarry conditions if you have no ground to shoot over you'll be hard pushed arguing the need

It won't be open for rifles that are granted for club use only if the OP has nowhere else to shoot these rifles

Do I need to send the current FAC original in with the renewal application? I thought I could keep it. If not, I will need to start buying ammo.
Many forces don't require you to send your FAC in when renewing or varying, mine certainly doesn't. Also if you are applying online they don't ask for it as everything is done electronically.

Personally I don't see any benefit of applying for renewal more than 10 weeks in advance (yes I am aware of the 8 weeks and automatic extension ruling) because if you send your application in too soon it will just land up stacked in a pile. That is unless your FEO has made you aware of a slack period when it may be beneficial to them evening out the work load and subsequently you will receive prompt service.

I would also be conscious of the fact that your medical records check may not be considered valid if it is sent in too soon before renewal.

If your renewal details have not' changed since last time,ie no additional weapons or issues, then the process will be straight forward. Ensure you have ALL' required documents filled in by your counter signatories, I would take advice from your friendly FEO before sending it to early.

For my renewal, I'll be asking for 3 x more guns and a bit more ammo for the existing. Two WW2 service rifles of different calibers and a 300 magnum for long range (1500m or so). The 6.5 Creedmoor isn't long range enough.

Is there any info on how many guns before the police (Met police in my case) ask for additional security, such as a monitored alarm? If I get 3 more guns, that will be a total of 12.

Another thing is the referee. The police only called one referee last time, but the person who they called has moved overseas. The easiest thing would be to ask my previous referee's 20-something daughter, who I've known since her childhood. But would that be a bit weird for the police, me being a slightly plump, middle aged bloke asking a 20-something woman who doesn't shoot to be a referee? Should I ask one of my similarly plump, similarly middle aged male friends?

Your additional weapons will' probably require you to install an alarm (9 or more), if you do not already have one. Your choice of referee requires some one of good character who has personally known you for several years. The best advice is you have time enough to prepare' by asking, your FEO. After all, that is what he is there for.

Some observations:

You might struggle to get good reason for multiple .303s to use for stalking/vermin control. Maybe one, maybe even two (one as a back up). You'd be safe asking for use on approved ranges, assuming you are a member of one. If you had some land, you might get to use them on land for zeroing.

I don't think being a 20 something year old woman without a certificate is a bar to being a referee. So long as she fits the criteria of being of good character and has known you for a few years.

Some forces do ask for your old certificates on renewal, some don't. Just ensure you have enough ammo to tide you over.

I don't know how many stalks you've booked since last renewal, but so long as you can show you are having paid stalks, that should suffice. I bet some people go a lot, but some, with a job and a young family might not get out more than once a year. Both should be ok.

As Bullet Chucker says, if the number hits the magic number, you might need an alarm.

Initially, just put in your renewal asking for what you want. Try to get good reason for each rifle sorted. tThen wait for your FEO to make contact and I'm sure if there's any issues, he'll tell you and they can be sorted out one way or another.

^ I'm planning on asking for totally different service rifles. I already have a Lee Enfield 303. I'd like to get a Mauser K98K and an Arisaka 99. It would be a shame if they were limited to target use only (as the 303 is at the moment; I'll ask for it to be opened). I think they would be suitable for up to 100 metres, ie heavily wooded areas on foot or a high seat (suitable as in there would be confidence in having an impact within a couple of inches of the aim point).

The 300 magnum should be easy enough to justify for long range use and I have a trip to a 2000 metre long range planned for next year. Regular shooting long range (over 1000 metres) over the last year. I'll see if I could get that 300 magnum open for land use too.

I have heard 15 being the magic monitored alarm number. OTOH I have also heard 10 as being the number.

There is no set number.
Whether or not you are asked to install an additional layer of security will depend upon perceived risk. For example, if you live in a high crime area, where break-ins are common. It stands to reason that a larger collection of firearms would be easier for an intruder to locate within a property, and more worth their while getting access to them.

GMP alarm for ten or over get the med cert done asap then send in the paperwork ask for whatever you want they can only say no

Regarding your open certificate status, each and every renewal is treated as a new application and therefore you must satisfy the reason to possess each time, by means of club membership, nominated land or pre paid for stalks,
