Renewed love for the .243

Since getting a 6.5CM a couple of years ago, the old 243 hasn’t been out of the cabinet since.

120gr Sako Blades in 6.5 just work - 80gr Barnes TTSX in 243 kills, but Ive found just doesn’t stop even if going up the front leg.

With the fallow season over, I rezeroed with 58gr VMAX for the table - 1/2 inch grouping out of my Mauser.

Appreciating smaller species, but jeez what a difference - dogs getting fat. 😄

Few pics from the last fortnight.

Those 58 grain V-max .243 rounds are pretty amazing, aren't they? I use them for head shooting fallow, and it certainly rekindled my love for the .243 (which hadn't been out of the cabinet much since I got my .270).

The first deer I shot in 1982 was with a 243 spitting an 87g Federal Premium Grade hollow point. Distance was closer to 200-yards than 100. The wee red stag dropped on the spot.

Clearly I should have known better than to use a varmint bullet on deer but neither the FCS Ranger nor the Game Dealer seemed to mind.

Good stuff Russ :tiphat: .243 does it all.

I’ve picked up some very old Norma 110 gr for my 243

Shot a buck the other week with it and it was a delight. A lovely soft thump and the beast dropped on the spot

I can’t see me without a .243 if I’m honest

.243 would be my choice if I was only aloud one rifle, I go through phases of favouritism between 6.5CM, .243 and .223 am currently in a phase of .223 shot loads this year with it great round.
The .243 with me has taken everything and a joy to shoot currently set up as a dedicated night rifle with 58g Vmax but am fancying a change around so come autumn it will probably be topped with glass and zeroed with RWS 100g I find those excellent for deer.
