Reporting Poaching

I have to disagree, if every incident is reported that will create a pattern of events, once that is established that nothing has been done about it then someone can be held accountable. If everyone takes the "whats the point" attitude, the powers that be will simply say "what poaching, we have no reports of it". My wife works with elderly at risk people, her basic rule is, if its not written down, it didn't happen.

Silly. Do you want the crime number to check? Two officers literally arrived the following afternoon and took a statement. About 3 years ago we were plagued with poachers and thefts of galvanised gates, it was literally every night.

Will do, are you a serving Police Officer? I'd be interested to find out what happened as they were making enquiries but I never did hear back.

Not sticking up for bobby but Met cops are told by desk sergeant could you not deal with it in a another way . When you was shot at surely they should be there in minutes but is it only legal holders that have a hard time.
Oh yeah ? Crime reference numbers are very soon given out! Not behing funny but been there tried that , only so many times a man can bash his head against a wall
You would think someone shooting a rifle , killing a pregnant hind even leaving the calf in its sack to suffocate out of season obviously and having my home in the backdrop would be enough ?

Then I have worse like a senior officer stating a pnc check was never done and an incident didn't happen , when I witnessed it being done personally on the device . confidence in the coppers ? Nah ! Had it once

7 hours to respond to the local estate that had uninvited visitors (scum) yet I notice a traffic officer sat in his vehicle on a motorway bridge watching the M3 all day the other day.

Earn more money of motorist in fines. All Met police have to have a Degree now told by a old copper they come out not knowing the Basics policing and having to learn on the go.
The time you took to reply to me could have been used to send the complaint to the police,

A traffic officer watching the M3, oh a what a misuse of public funds, next they'll be sending a firearms officer to an armed robbery. Where do you think more crime is likely to be commited or and accident occur, a field or one of the countries busiest motorways.
No point I made myself heard clearly to them. Official anythings never get anything done , had senior police bare face lie a year or two earlier on another matter

Yeh well, if coursing was still legal then it would be law abiding dog men on your land instead of criminals.
So here's my view on reporting poachers. Call the police every time for the amount of effort it takes. They may do nothing. They may start to do something if they get enough calls. And if not, it at least gives you something to moan about on SD and the knowledge that you've done your bit.
You should definitely report wildlife crime each time however manage your expectations as to what will happen with that report! The police have to have a general knowledge of a lot of offences so unfortunately when it comes to specific wildlife offences, unless you’re talking to the wildlife crime officer who specialises in that field (no pun intended), then the chances are the cop who turns out won’t really have a clue about what offence they are dealing with.

We reported a poacher who had fired his rifle on our ground - close enough to feel the shockwave. Police Scotland’s response was a) how do you know it was a rifle and b) no armed response units available so unable to send anybody.
What is needed in the UK is a dedicated rural / wildlife / countryside ranger type service with the powers to investigate and arrest as well as advise. Sadly most police are focused elsewhere, and countryside rangers employed by local councils, national parks etc are in the impossible position of having to deal with idiots without any real powers to deal with them.

Shooting organisations should put pressure all forces for legal shooters to be able to report and get a response for armed trespassers and a action line with organisations to be able to log on and report these actions.
Part of the issue for Police forces is a finite amount of officers at any one time that they can deploy. How they deploy them is based on the expected issues at that time/day of the week and any planned events that may be taking place.
Therefore if no one reports crimes/ incidents then they do not show up on the radar, so officers are not deployed to that area. Therefor if something then happens, you have longer to wait until a suitable unit is available.
In the days of health and safety, it is irresponsible to deploy an unarmed officer to try and stop an armed offender.. (Having gone up against an person armed with a pistol, with just a baton and cuffs - it does loosen the bowels slightly
) As to asking how you know it is a rifle, there have been countless calls where guns have been seen or heard even by people that are used to them (shooters/soldiers/police officers) that turn out to be nothing of the sort.... fireworks, cars backfiring, table legs in a bag. some of these calls have ended up in people being shot, so asking questions to gain intelligence/information/evidence is not a bad thing.The more you report, the more likely that there may be someone available and reasonably nearby.
