Retrofitting BDC

Has anyone here ever retrofitted a BDC, or is it so technical it has to go to the factory?

I'm thinking of

Schmidt Bender BDC Turret (fitted on new scope)

I was told they need to go to the factory.
The seal to the internals is broken when the BDC gets fitted meaning it needs
a new gas fill.
