the point of this is if a guy that is asking advise on caliber for boar in Uk asks he needs some sensible advice and my point that’s been missed is to stick with his 6.5 that he is used to not encourage a fairly new to the job person to start with a 22 [no disrespect to woodm]
I take it Dodgy you are from New Zealand that’s fine what you do there is what you do same as USA I know that M4 type rifles are most commonly used in USA,I have a friend in northern Germany uses the new sig mcx in 5.56 with a can at certain times he uses it and he shoots a lot of boar 200 plus a year on his estate .This is all fine
Her in Uk we are realy under threat of a trophy ban that could have far reaching implications on the Uk stalking industry I sit on 2 national committees her in the Uk that are fighting for our survival I’m a game farmer ,a farmer I have a deer park and stalking enterprise employ 6 workers full time so yes I will preach a sermon on acting correctly if it’s to promote the industry that we work in .
on 9mm thing i us a 9mm because it’s easy to load and has a can on it would of liked a 357 sig but can’t get ammo so easily.

Got nothing to do with anything mate, you can sit on as many boards as you like, still doesn’t mean to say you get to imply I’m incorrect for doing what we do, bloody well I might add. And read the original post again, what did I tell him to do? To use his 6.5... “Honestly mate, use your 6.5”. Who told him to use a .223? You’re the fella that’s missing the point, suggest you start again at the beginning. Drop it, move on.

I usually shoot pigs over bait with a .223 Remington! And a 50gr bullet! Or sometimes my .243 Win and on one memorable occasion my Ruger 10/22! It’s taken a while for @Woodmister to tell us what he’s gonna be doing, but now we know, all the suggestions of heavy duty rifles can probably take a back seat. Honestly mate, use your 6.5, you’re going to be sitting right there, piggy is going to be head down / bum up and not exactly moving at 25mph, eh. Just shoot it in the right place, like in the head, with a sensible bullet, job done.

Otherwise, feel free to massively over-complicate matters as you see fit!

Backed up with slug in both barrels of the shotgun.

Sorry mate but I couldn't help it but the pointer just doesn't look right with a long tail. My GWP would be blinking dangerous around the house if he didn't have a docked tail. It would be like a whip lashing back and fore.

i have the chance of doing some wild boar shooting, have rifles already max cal being 6.5x55.

i like the thought of an underlever to do this and maybe some woodland deer, but the calibers are limited.

so looking for advice on cal and rifle choices please?

Its funny how wild pigs have been elevated by the Internet to Rhino or even Stegosaurus levels of toughness.

They are mid size mammals, and are not bullet proof.
A 308 is absolutely loads of rifle for boar, so the OP has made a good choice.

I've used a 308, 12 gauge 660 grain slugs and a 338 to kill pigs before I realised they're not hard to kill.
Last shoot was 2 pigs with one bullet from my S&W 29 with a 300 grain hard cast bullet that exited the first pig thru the shoulder and killed another one behind it.
I found the bullet and keep it as a memory.
