Rifle Course - Cumbria

You may or may not be aware that there are two, one day, Rifle training courses being run by the Deer Initiative in conjunction with Cumbria Woodlands and the BDS North West Branch at the branch range at Grayrigg, Cumbria.

The dates of the courses are the 16th and 17th March 2013 - thats this coming weekend!

This course will look at gun fit, marksmanship principles, zeroing, range estimation, wind judging and different shooting positions. There will be the opportunity to put into practice the entire above out on the range.

The instructor will be Bradley Bourner who is a marksman and instructor in the Royal Marine Commandos

I understand there are spaces left on the sunday course (17th march)

Should anyone be interested in participating, you will need to contact Alistair Boston from the Deer Initiative at the above e -mail address northwest@thedeerinitiative.co.uk on work mobile 07855 606877

You will also need 60 rounds for the day, a rifle, FAC, insurance etc.

The cost of the day is £60

I'm booked on the sunday and I guarantee no matter how experienced a shot you are, you will learn something pertinent to deer management

The range will only be set at 100 mtrs

The course is, I understand designed to improve a persons all round rifle skills, not just longer ranges.

I attended and thought it was excellent. It was all very relevant as - although the 2 instructors were serving/ex RM sniper instructors they were both stalkers and one (Bradley Bourner) is now a pro stalker again with the FC. We all improved on the target for our learnings.

Paul at Barony - I have been stalking for 25 years (inc pro for the FC in the early 90s) DSC2 etc yet still found I learnt alot. I have been on a military-run course when in the OTC but it was 23 years ago and I have forgotten everything I learnt! How many people have had a shotgun lesson, 50% of those who use a shotgun? How many have rifle lessons, 1%? I personally feel IMHO that I owe it to the deer I manage to train and learn as much as I can.

I would recommend the course to anyone of any level, we proved that on Saturday.

I went along on Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Many thanks to Brad and Ben for their excellent instruction - tops guys who both had not only an amazing ability with regards to shooting but also had the proficiency to get the information over to all the participants who were behind the rifles.

Also thanks to Alastair and the NW Branch of the BDS for organising such a great day.

I don't think there was anybody who didn't improve after the instruction irrespective of how experienced they were.

Many thanks

Robin

I was also there on Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Brad and Ben were excellent instructors and top guys. I would have benefited from more time with them even though I rarely shoot a deer beyond 100 metres. Both had the vital proficiency to get the information over to all the participants who were behind the rifles.I was struggling to shoot comfortably in the prone position and discovered that my stock comb was too low. I also gained confidence that my shooting from other positions was actualy not too shabby after all!

Also thanks to Alastair [ for all the coffee and Bourbons !] the NW Branch of the BDS and Cumbria Woodlands for organising the event.

I don't think there was anybody who didn't get some thing from the day.

I went to the Sunday session, it was indeed a very good course. Well presented, and lots of useful information. Congratulations to all involved in setting up and sweeping up afterwards!

Andy do they need to bring there own rifles or can they use ones from the range. Also just a thought i have ran a few DSC 1 ASSMENT DAYS TRAINING DAYS AND FULL ON CERT DAYS. If there is any were that needs its own section its Rifle shooting cleaning and maintenance. Wind judgement i am not sure about but hey i am willing to learn.
Will there be one in scotland shire ??
