Rifle only?

I was chatting to a Finnish guy a couple of weeks ago about hunting. He said he had a 9.3 for deer and moose and a 308 for game birds.

Obviously I was perplexed.

Further questioning revealed that it is standard practice over there to snipe them out of the top of trees with a 308, and they just don’t worry about where the round lands! He said he could see why we didn’t do that in the UK with our population density, but that it had never heard anyone in Finland suggest it was risky!
I had a similar experience in Sweden.
It makes sense in their situation, the countryside is mostly flat, tree covered and very sparsely inhabited with no livestock.
Theres very little chance of the bullet reaching the ground at all, let alone hitting anyone or anything accidentally.

Stalking pheasant is good sport. It doesn't have to involve baiting.
I prefer a proper stalk. And they make fine fare. They don't taste much different than chicken.
Partridge is nicer though 👍🏻
The pheasant was stalked until it got suspicious at 50 yards and I sent a 180gn sub sonic bullet through it's neck off hand.
How do you find the levers, in a practical sense? I've debated on a small calibre lever for the fun of it, given any varminting would be tablefare for myself anyways.

I'm not sure what you mean but I find them very practical. Easy to carry in hand or shoulder.
Re small calibre my Winchester 9422 I had was one of the most accurate 22's I ever owned. I regularly pulled off long off hand shots on rabbits at distances most would scoff at !
I even shot for ages on a simple peep sight.
In the picture below is a rabbit shot at 130 paces with a Winchester t22 bullet off hand.
In the picture you can see the recovered bullet and a bullet hole in the green leaf.

The 357 I had was brilliant for small game on very frugal loads.

.22 perfect for mopping up cock birds at the end of the season. I shoot a lot more pheasants with a rifle than with a shotgun. No more arse shot mangled birds, easier to pluck & dress. Much better to eat. Just drive around slowly in the truck, mop em up!

Just curious, is what you’re doing legal?
