Morning,
We've been asked by the estate to complete a Risk assessment and Method statement for the use of firearms on our shoot.

Does anyone have or know of a good template that I would be able to adapt to suit our needs. Thanks in advance.

Kind regards

Gary

I'm now off stalking for a couple of days but if you PM me your email address I will send some over that you can edit for your needs. Mine will probably be a bit over the top for standard stalking land but it will give you a good idea.

Thank you, that would be great. I need to adapt it to suit all rifle use, so over the top is probably perfect, thanks again. Gary.

Is it solely regarding the use of firearms, or is to cover all aspects of deer stalking on the estate?

The latter will include the former, but will also incorporate other elements of a comprehensive risk assessment (e.g use of high seats, solo working, etc.).

Also if you organise separate cull days, involving non-regular stalkers, you may want a separate document for that.

Be clearly focused on the objectives, one of which is to go out and assess YOUR land.
Where are the hazards (e.g stoney ground, public paths, blind dips).
How will mitigate those hazards?

The document is just the means of recording what you've accessed.

Starting with ANIOs document might inadvertently lead you into "document production", rather that "assessing the hazards on your land".

For sure there will be some standard words models that you can cut paste, ( e.g. High Seat use, access, maintenance; Putting rifles away etc).

But the most important thing is identifying all the Harards on YOUR land, (e.g. Ricochet). Then deciding how likely they are to happen, (e.g. identfy stoney, vs soft ground) and finally how you'll mitigate the event happening. (e.g. No shoot areas, fragable bullets, only DSC1 certificate holders shoot).

Don't forget you and you pals will need to live by the mitigation steps that you record in it.
There is no point stating an "over the top" blar blar, then not following it.

Edit your headline.
Bloody auto correct! 😂

It's for all aspects of rifle use. It's not something I've ever had to do so I'm not sure what's required. I would guess most of its common sense like using safe backstops, use of high seats, not shooting towards the public footpath etc... I just didn't want to miss something and hold up the process. I was also unsure how to format it, so a tried and tested template would make things a lot easier when assessing our land and writing it.

I have sent you a PM.
