Roe Buck Calling

These are my calls, the antlered one i've had for more years than I care to remember, I bought that from a company in Germany

I've had great success with the call from that German company too — does the job nicely. The Buttolo roe call has also worked really well for me during the rut; simple little thing but it brings them in.

Nordic, cherry wood,

Weisskirchen Bleep Roe Deer and keep the butallo for long range.

The wooden ones are much more subtle, the butallo is more like a “Who wants it then!”

I've always use them for something. Remember one had been shot and recovered, skungy skinny thing. But hardy, have to hand him that. Made fine mince.
I know a think or two about game calls.
The oestrus, alarm, who are you/ I'm here location call. They are similar air pressures in other species. Noticeable in the vocal species. Like Elk or Sika same as Roe.
Oestrus soft slow bleat/baaa. Alarm of course short and sharp..can work if ones on heat and in the confusion the stag thinks its another stag causing it. And location just a normal not high air pressure whistle.
Once you know the simple and pretty obvious rule you can use any caller well on any of them.
I love Sika. Stroppy, cunning and inquisitive.
In the big bush get close to several mature stags with a hind on heat and its primordial.
One time I had the wind right and a group of six were milling around a hind. I was soft single calling on the whistle. Could barely hear it. They went into frenzy. Just a real soft mew.

Have any of you guys used calls outside the rut? I was talking too a finish friend who swears by it he gets reactions with it through the entire year, curiosity of the bucks get the better of them.

I use a roe kid call 12 months a year almost entirely on muntjac and mostly just to hold them in their tracks for a shot as they are often on the move. Sometimes you can get muntjac bucks to come out of cover and I have seen both roe bucks and does appear but nowhere near as often as bucks in the rut.

I have made my own roe kid call as I I wanted something hands free that I could use to hold muntjac in their tracks while I was literally on the sticks ready to pull the trigger. And it had to be almost impossible to break as well with no moving parts. I keep meaning to get trade membership sorted out again to do some more leatherwork but time is not hugely available to me at the moment. If I do, I will put a few of the roe calls up for sale. They are simple but work really well and I expect would be well utilised by many on here.

Nope rut only, but i am a purist!

Calling is a skill honed for the rut and the rut only in my personal opinion.

Calling pre rut just ****s things up and educates them.

That I dont disagree with, this particular time period isn't the most ideal but even In winter I've been told It sometimes has success, I had peered around here a few weeks back and found a few posts on it too of reactions through the entire year.

I do feel like a pheep probably has the better chance of stopping a spooked deer, but I dont think I would carry a call every day for that particular reason though.

I've tried barking.... I do not have the voice for that! disadvantage of a women in this case lmao.

You don’t even need that or you’ve got a shout is oi or whistle, they are the easiest deer to stop when you startle them

If not too spooked I’ll give them a shout but if they are a bark or two can work wonders.
My barks sound alright to my lugs but the missus disagrees which means the beasts probably stop to have a look back and think WTF?

Yep! I need too master it, Its such a handy tool in the book.

A loud shout Is great for deer on the move that otherwise Is unaware your there but a bark can seriously make a difference In a spooked deer, a mature buck isnt going too stop for an oi most times but you've got a smidge more chance with a bark, especially If they haven't outright caught on what you actually are!

Calling in a roe buck is something I'd love to see done by someone who really knows the game. It must be thrilling when you get it right.
called one in last year from 2 fields off. came up to me like a steam train then disappeared by a small wood .reappeared 10 yards away actually head butting the fence to get thru. Not a long range shot to be honest but he was particularly delicious and i felt the skill merit badge was earnt with the calling rather than the marksmanship despite nearly swallowing the buttalo with excitement
