I have attached a couple of pictures of a liver from an, otherwise healthy mature roe doe I culled today. She had a 3cm diameter grey cyst on the edge of the liver which, when incised had black tar-like contents. When chopping up the rest of the liver there was other cyst internally that had black/dark brown blood in it. There was no foul smell.
As the land is wet here and we have plenty of sheep we do suffer from liver fluke in the deer, hence I suspected that the cysts were historical liver fluke damage.
However, to be sure I sent the pictures to Buchan and SRvet off this site, who are both vets and they confirmed thus. The contents was clotting blood. Also that the liver was OK for the dogs to eat.
