Roe sack comparison

Morning,

I appreciate this has been spoken about many times but other posts dont answer all my questions.

I am hoping some of you will have experiance of using BOTH the Apex Predator and the Ogdens compack roe sacks. There are lots of views on each but no real side by side comparisons or views from stalkers who have used both.

So, any hands on experiance with both?

What is the actual sack size comparison of the 2 when open - can 1 hold more than the other?

I am only in my 2nd season of stalking (on my own) and now cover a 300 acre compartment. Over the years I have dragged and used a shoulder strap to extract roe, fallow and red. All kit is on my belt or in a small waist bag.

This new 300 acre site is bloody steep and wet in places but involves moving through very thick cover and mature plantations to get to my key areas (if the wind is against me) - so I dont want an empty sack on my back. Target species is roe, unless I feel really keen and want to grass a couple of reds but there is a plan in place to extract them.

I will be interested to hear if you can give your views having used both.

Sorry but dont have both, but was in the same position a couple of years ago. Carry a near empty bag or a belt with all essentials which converted into a roe sack.

My ground is similar with little access, and having dragged a few out through brambles, I wanted to go the carry route. I went with the napier apex and I have to say im very pleased with it.

Used it tocarry out over a dozen roe and munties and its still holding up strong.

Best thing about it is, whip the animal and the liner out of the rucksack, put the spare in, fold it up back into belt form and your good to go for next time. No messing with emptying/ misplacing vital kit when washing it out.

Got a nice pic of it in use but cant seem to load it currently.
 
Get a monarch sika sack. Plenty of space for 2 roe or one small / medium fallow if you come across one of them. Front pockets for kit and whole sack is compact on back and lets the rifle work well on sling if barrel up. Don't see the point of the compact bum bag type design, but that's my view. Also good for carrying extra layers, flask etc. for the cold winter high seat sessions.

Does the Roe Sack shoulder strap interfere with the rifle sling on the shoulder at all?
 
The Monarch/Ogden Sacks are very well made.
I don’t have both to compare,as when I bought the Ogden sack I saw no reason to purchase anything else.
I have had roe,fallow,sika and a very excited 7 yr old in the Odgen sack with no issue.
I have had to pack deer out a fair way,once you hit the sweet spot of adjusting on your back,your more or less good to go.
 
Another for Ogden here, I have fitted 4 muntjac in one morning and on another 2 roe no problems. Comfortable to carry the deer and on the shoulder strap is a hook for your rifle sling to stop it falling off while extracting the deer!
 
Sorry to highjack the thread but I'm in a similar position to the OP, i currently have a Harkila Fenja Roe sack and its ok but the shoulder straps do my head in and conflict with wearing a harness style rifle sling. I'm seriously tempted by the Ogdens compact roe sack that sits as a bum bag when not in use. Has anyone used one? Do they get on your nerves or 'bounce' off your arse when stalking?
I looked at the Monarch Roe sack at the northern shooting show, its nice kit but just not for me, its too heavy even when its empty and as above i couldnt wear a harness style sling with it..

I bought an Ogden copy of a Barbour shoulder bag which he had made up for someone who then never collected it. It has been all over the USA & Mexico in the last ten years or so since purchase still looks like new and functions 100% plus he was a pleasant chap to talk to on top, what more can one ask for he is an old school craftsman.
 
I have both. The apex was great for a while but eventually the belt side straps started to unweave and the plastic liner got holes on the fold lines. Went for the Monarch compact to replace it, much better quality and had quite a bit of use out of it.
I prefer waist packs to a back pack so that the rifle can sit on the shoulder but can be a pain for slipping as they both use a webbing belt. With a deer in it the apex is easier to use as it’s one piece, the Monarch is a take out Roe sack so you still have the waist pack as well as a Roe sack to fit on your back along with the rifle!
If you had the apex with the Monarch liner and a leather belt, you would have the best of both worlds!
 
Try to find a good, i.e. looked after used example of the Wright roe sack; made for FC rangers and many professionals 1980-2000; proper leather straps, proper fittings, proper ripstop outer, proper liner material; if properly maintained, they last - I'm using one full time which is 40 years plus old still, the one shown with pockets here is about thirty year vintage. They don't make 'em like we used to!

Persuading someone to part with one will be where the luck comes in. Good hunting!
