Many may have seen this article by the RSPB where it salves its conscience and the conscience of those who donate by suggesting most of the 27 million birds killed by cats annually "would probably have died anyway in their first year". It suggests that the remainder from 100 Million prey items, i.e. a lot more animals, are not worth further comment. I wonder if some of those might be snakes, as my cat used to catch, lizards under threat, frogs, newts - 73 MILLION annually and its not a problem - reflect on that whilst worrying about pheasants and what they eat.

And also why many birds would " probably die in the 1st year" but is not the case with BoP where they all should have a 100% survival rate.

When in reality they usually have a higher than average juvenile mortality rate

They tend to just leave the head, back legs and tail, none of which looks that appetising

I had to look that up but like almost everything else they have protection (W&CA) - so either tell your cat off or put mustard on the next one it catches. The Romans used to keep them in kitchens with a cover over the pot - seems they fed them on hazlenuts. I dont have a recipe though.

Go to the Southern Hemisphere (Aus & NZ) where they still have some sense and see what they do to moggy.

The same as us , high speed sleeping pills . In Alberta , it's a fineable offence to allow a cat to wander at will , they are a pet . It really isn't a big deal , you don't allow dogs to run around , why is a cat any different ?

It might strike anyone in the UK as strange , but I did notice how many cats are wandering around when I was there in 2018 . I suppose it's a normal thing there .

My standard distance, one step over a quarter of a mile from home puss, and you're dead.
We have several feral farm cats about at present and I'm afraid some are on a one way ticket.

Call me a coward but, in the same way that the RSPB have avoided this issue, so should our community in my opinion.

Taking on UK cat-owners would do for us what opening a second front in the East did for the Germans.

I completely understand and probably agree with your point but it’s a huge bone of contention with me, a house not far from mine has a lady that is a nice lady but oblivious to the damage her cats do and she keeps adding more of the ba*tards to her household (she has been in trouble with another house in the area as she was feeding in their cat thinking it was a stray in need)

we had some pretty diverse song birds and birds in general and most of the owners I speak to in the area are fed up with seeing her cats in the are, we had 3 pairs of woodpeckers in the area and within a matter of weeks we found 3 dead (one of which the cat still had)

we tried asking her if she could put a bell on them but she thinks that’s cruel to cats and that there’s nothing you can do about their natural instils to hunt....

I explained that my Labrador could also have some instincts to chase and kill things but I prevented it doing that...even though on my property it would have been (in my opinion justified)

I know everyone knows this but just for the rant - I cannot understand a pet that you throw out the door and allow to go round everyone else’s properties!

it’s the same with the petition to make not reporting cats being hit in RTA’s a crime - what a load of tripe - if you care that much about the cat keep control of it and where it is!

when younger my parents had a cat that lived with our dog and stayed in the house unless we were out in the garden - I don’t remember it being unhappy at all, why can’t other owners do this??

As you say, you don't need to convince me of the harm they do. I just think we have very little reputational capital available to waste, and should probably leave it to someone else to have the fight.

I honestly don’t think it matters much what we (the shooting community) do, I fully expect to see an end to recreational shooting within a decode or two...too many liberals that know nothing about it yet still abhor any shooting or need for guns.

so I guess speaking out about cats won’t make much odds.
