Sad but predictable

@Greenmist & @Dan Newcombe , I can't remember the last time I saw a dog advertised on here for under £2K. That's the going rate and the people on here are selling for that rate. What do you consider is a fair price Greenmist?

I remember dogs well under that price before the pandemic, my point wasn't the price on here, it was the tumbleweed blowing through the dog sale section, more lucrative markets are out there. When people are selling patterdales for £1500 and one eyed pomeranians for £900 (both on here) you have to question the ethics on here, and so you know before its suggested I would do the same, I chose not to breed from either of my bitches this year or the previous for that matter as greed has clouded many peoples judgement and I wouldn't feel comfortable letting any pup of mine go

I simply don’t understand how it is a question of ethics what you charge for a puppy - just because people are paying strong money doesn’t mean that you don’t check as far as you can that they will be good, responsive owners. What is it that makes the person only willing to spend £600 a better owner than someone who would pay £2000 for that same thing? It’s all about the individual.

Going rate at the moment seems to be £2 - 2500 but I suspect that it is going down and I reckon it will level out at about £1500 for decent stuff. The irony is that when you breed good quality, health tested and proven working dogs people expect them for less than a pot licker to a pot licker from town with no health tests and bred by people who have zero clue.

The solution is to buy a Bitch, train it, prove it, health test it and if it turns out good enough 3 years later you look to breed it’s replacement at some point and then choose what you want to use as a stud, take the dog there (my wife traveled from Aberdeenshire to Warwickshire for a lab stud) and then produce hopefully what you want, with the risk that you lose everything - you can then sell them for whatever you like. If you don’t like the sound of that - you need to buy one and the you are at the whim of the market.

People are selling for less but they are few and far between and you will have to jump through a lot of hoops if you don’t know the breeder.

Hearing of lots of pups available at the moment.

Seeing lots of adds for pups 9-12 weeks old that still haven't sold.

Breeders are trying to hold out for big money rather than see the pups going at 8 weeks.

Spokr to a lad just an hour ago said he saw Labs recently priced at £1800 but the breeder had to drop them to £1200 before he could sell them.

The biggest crime isn’t well bred dogs selling for £1200 or whatever, it’s all the shite that’s been bred just for the sake of it.

Wonder what damage that will do to the breeds over years to come.

You already have breeds like cockers that are notorious for making noise because people bred noisy ones etc.

Dogs are a commodity with what people pay these days, breeders being the worst examples.
As for importing unwanted dogs from abroad, and breeders doing the same, while there are homeless dogs for adoption is just madness.

Neil.
Have you tried adopting a dog these days.No you go out to work(part time),no the garden is not big enough,no your fence is 6 inches too short,no not if you are going to work them,no your kids are too young,no you don't believe in all dogs needing boosted jabs.It is not that easy to adopt a dog.

If your home and lifestyle are not deemed suitable for adopting a dog, perhaps you shouldn't actually have one ?

Neil.

So are you saying it you want a dog to take out shooting ,ratting,or hunting you are not suitable.Because that is what most rescue places say.Or you are not suitable because you go out to work.Get real mate.
