Hi all,

I have two matching Sako 75 Deluxes, both short actions in nice wooden stocks.

I had one rebarreled in 6.5 Creedmoor by Brock & Norris then Cerakoted a few years ago. It was bedded and is unbelievably accurate even with factory ammo so is my go-to rifle for the hill or the woods.

The other is in .308 Win and now it never leaves the cabinet. The inside of the barrel is worn and although it shoots OK (sub 2 MOA groups with factory ammo), I don't use it and would probably choose to rebarrel it if I kept it.

Now to the crux of the problem: I find myself constantly wishing I had a light, synthetic stocked rifle with stainless barrel for the miserable days climbing up rusty high seats, etc. that can be bashed about a bit. My dilemma is do I rebarrel my 308 (probably keeping it in the same calibre to allow for different ammunition, uses, etc.) and drop it into an aftermarket stock or do I buy a Sako 90 Adventure. I suspect the 75 would be marginally cheaper to rebarrel, restock and Cerakote.

All best,

Z.

I fondled an adventure and a peak in my local shop today. The adventure was nice, and a cut above a tikka etc, but the peak was something else - beautifully balanced even with a scope and a stalon mod on it.

Never handled a 75 so can’t really compare though.

Are there many aftermarket options for a sako? I’ve been looking around and not found much except some laminates

Didn't consider the Peak based on price but maybe I should have a fondle myself! Aftermarket stocks quite limited for 75's these days but GRS and Staffordshire Synthetic Stocks seem to cater for them and Steve Kershaw seems to have a 75 stock on his website as an option. I believe PSE may be worth a conversation as well as people like Kroseg. The Deluxe has a slightly different floor plate/magazine setup to a standard 75 so will need to investigate what is feasible.

I think Edi/PSE has no-no'd the Sako 75 on a multitude of occasions. Standard factory synthetic would do though ?

That is interesting. Hadn't really considered an original synthetic stock as I'd heard they get a bit of flex over time and I may go for a fluted barrel that's a touch larger in diameter (I accept full judgement!) but I haven't got as far as working out the max diameter available.

Not up to speed on the availability of anything out with standard "hunter/sporter" spec synthetic stock. As I recall, my standard one didn't have a lot of clearance and didn't like heavy pushing into the bipod, but that compounded with it not particularly liking Federal 243 100g factory.

I think Boyd's do an inlet for a Sako 75. Laminate stock, reasonably priced. They are good to deal with. I put one on my CZ 527 and am really pleased.

Definitely rebarrel the 75. I’ve recently picked up my S/A 75 in 7mm08 with a new Bartlein barrel chopped at 18in in a McMillan stock. All stainless action and barrel then cerakoted for the same reasons as you stated 👍🏻
Very Nice. I have the same stock in a IV action. 6.5x55, original barrel cut down to 21".

I would go with the Adventure, much lighter & shoots/works well. Being from the north of Sweden were we mostly carry the guns and shoots very seldom, weight is important, ha, ha. I use a custom rifle and a Blaser but a friend of mine use the Adventure and I like it a lot. Not that I have ordered one but I have considered :-).

Went through the same decision 12 months ago - ended up going for a synthetic 75, with plans to buy a Kroseg stock once I had seen one in the flesh. Ended up finding a Mcmillan stock in the meantime, which was going to be temporary, but I really like it and can't justify the extra £ on a Kroseg stock.

I actually ended up buying a floorplate magazine system from a deluxe which I have swapped out as I'm not keen on detachable magazines, especially those which can't be locked in place. Bottom metal is the same shape, so no fettling required.

Just need to get it cerakoted, but there is never a convenient time!

Quick update on this and thank you all for your responses. Extremely helpful and interesting that the old 75 is still preferable to a 90 for various reasons. Probably rather predictably, I'm probably going to go for both! I found a factory synthetic stock for the 308 on here and a lead-free bullet that it likes and it is shooting around an MOA or a smidge less now. This is a great interim measure while I wait to see what happens on pricing with the 90's. I've also yet to hold new Finnlight which seems remarkably similar to the Adventure which may make buying into the 90's more palatable.

All best,

Z.
