Sako 85 ejection issue, dented case neck

Thankfully you don't need side focus!

The cheapish Zeiss Conquest on the Sako 85 is ffp, lowish magnification and so sports just two turrets.

I also own some sfp scopes with side-focus/parallax adjustment, including the sublime Z6, and clearly I could not fit any of those to this rifle.

I wonder if fitting a picatinny rail sorts the issue.

I

It does kind of ,,, raising the scope higher and avoiding the collision of brass striking

But

It shouldn’t happen in the first place

Nice looking rifle but flawed

The recoil lug can be fixed - the extraction - you can put five new extractors in the bolt head and cycle and you may get one that doesn’t do it

Raising the scope does not assist accuracy (cant problems, raised eyeline and no cheek support etc etc )

Larger cases seem to exacerbate the issue

I was thinking the case might hit the rail and deflect at a different angle and clear the turrets.

Added height does not have an affect on accuracy. Added “layers” that are out of tolerance may do.

Look at the sight over bore line of many chassis rifles. It’s huge.

However as you highlight getting cheek weld etc is harder.

The Near rails are the lowest available and are in fact about the same height as optilocks when partnered with low rings.

Of course it should happen in the first place.

85 in 308 is fine, no issues.

I agree.

I have one in 6.5x55 and it works fine but I’ve seen 2 in .375 that both had ejection issues. You can also load the rifle and have the bolt skate over the top of the magazine and fail to pick up a cartridge, that can get embarrassing.

What you might find is it’s your scope iv shot sakos for 15 years and some times it’s not actually the rifle at fault it’s the turrets on your scope that the brass is hitting

XS and S are ok.

Long action suck.

Hence be asking if the near rail would help bounce the brass.

I love the controlled feed of the short action. So quiet and you don’t loose the brass when out ok specific tasks.

Iv got a 30-06 with a Swarovski z8i on and it always ejects but some times it does dent the brass what scope and hight mounts are you using ?

There was some debate about this on forums that caused the maker to post some vids:

Something to note is that his designs differ a bit depending on the action size, not just length but also a cutout.

If you want a rail, get a Rem 700 and Sphur pic rail. They are a near-flawless fit and the contouring matches the action perfectly. EGW a close second. Not tried or seen a Murphy Precision but they are supposedly top class.

The near rails are very good iv had a few I just don’t like the way the rail closes up the port on the rifle that’s all

Neil Mckillop makes custom rails for sakos that are drilled and tapped to the action they are very nice but I believe they are around £400/£400
