Hi folks, im looking to pick up a Sako 90 for stalking and am after a laminate stock. I'm looking at the varmint however worried about the weight. am I worrying to much as its only 400 grams heavier?

Alternatively how stupid would it look to place a Finnlight into a varmint stock?? any ideas would be much appreciated!

How far are you planning on shooting deer? I think you will very soon regret the decision. The Laminate stock is already much heavier than other options, maybe alone in the 300-400 gram area at least is what we have weighed from older Sako rifles. Then add the varmint vs sporter barrel weight difference.
Problem is not going out for a deer.... it is the way back with a deer.

I have an 85 varmint and two 85 sporters. I use the Varmint primarily from the UTV as it gets too heavy when walking and stalking, and it's in a walnut stock! One of the sporters is a laminate and is ok for stalking but it received an Alpex 4K LRF yesterday and now it's a pretty hefty piece of kit. My walkabout favourites now are the other sporter, a walnut .308, for deer and my AI .222 for fox and feral cat.

Cheers

I've got a 85 varmint walnut, excellent rifle which I love, but I got to hate lugging it around so bought a lighter rifle for stalking. The 85 is now reserved for range use.

I can assure you that when handling any rifle in a gun shop without scope and sound moderator attached any rifle feels light and pointy.

300g plus for a mod
700g for a light scope.

If you are walking and Stalking start with a low base weight. I have a collection of various rifles but actually covet an associate’s tikka T3 lite he has put in a PsE stock. The balance is excellent and it has the adjustable cheek piece for correct scope alignment which I find is needed for the larger objective bell scopes that are popular. That includes the alpex which has a large ocular housing.

Not holding out for the Sako100?

Surely it's due any day now right?

The Sako and t3 will be indistinguishable performance wise - but a few key points, the Sako in the carbon quest means you don’t have to go buy a PSE stock, and you know it fits without any bedding etc.

The Sako will come with a double stack magazine. Single stacks might feed well, but 3 round mags for taking multiple animals is not ideal, and 5 round singles that stick out are on par with the annoyance of a Harris bipod, or worse!

The modified t3 will have a tough day in the used rifle shelf whereas a non-personalised Sako will retain value like a Mercedes.

Just my view, do whatever the F you want
Happy Monday!

I just bought a 90 peak and am very fond of it so far - it's nice and light compared to what I've used previously.
