Secare Model Knife

The Secare is a model of knife that I have made for more years than I care to remember, I have not made any for a while though and finished this one today, so here it is.

Not primarily designed as a stalking knife although I have a quite few clients who do use one as such. It was more designed as a general purpose outdoor knife, a camp knife, even a survival knife if you like, as they say though, the best survival knife is the one you have with you at the time

Blade length is around 100mm and the steel a sturdy 5mm thick, no tapering tang.

The original models were all black G10 over 3mm orange G10 liners and I was a little precious about that back in the day, then I decided to get over myself and offer the knife in colour options of both liners and scales.

The fixings are two 10mm OD stainless tubes, they are flared into place and are very, very secure, the thinking behind these back then was in order to create good sized lashing points.

The one you see here has those 3mm orange G10 liners, scales re black canvas Micarta though, I much prefer that to the G10 these days.

The one in the photo isn't yet sheathed, here a few examples of different sheaths that have been and can be supplied.

All leather, these often get a pouch for a sharpening stem and a loop for a ferro rod/fire steel.

Leather with a detachable Maxpedition pouch.

Kydex with TekLok style belt attachment.

Sometimes also you will notice they can get a ferro rod that I make matching the handle of the knife, these are a right royal PITA though so they aren't that common

The originals were all RWL34, there have also been a few Damasteel versions, these days the SF100 primarily unless spec'd otherwise.

This one is Centenary pattern Damasteel, the pattern created by Damasteel to celebrate the centenary of the discovery of stainless steel in 1913, they gave four UK knife makers some of the steel and asked them to create their 'benchmark' knife, I got some, Alan got some, I am fairly sure Guy did and I cannot recall the other one.

That is a thing of rare beauty Stuart. Love the design. Looks like an ideal outdoorsman general knife.

I have long lusted after these and the Muntjac knives Excellent design and execution, I love handle finish and flared hollow/tube rivets.

I tried the flared tube rivets on a knife I made once and I can tell you to get them as perfect as Stuart does is not easy! Gives you an appreciation for them.

I do like Damasteel too! Got a piece here waiting for me to do something special with it. Also have bushcraft knife in it.

They were part of the design brief to enable very secure lashing of the knife to something, for 'survival' purposes the obvious option being a stick, not so much to get your the 'John Rambo spear making, pig sticking badge' but more for the cutting of higher growing fruit, more real life potential lashing requirements.

Extremely well, the working of fire steel depends more on the profile of the steel than the grade of the steel. A nice square spine and the jobs a gud un.

So if I have knives struggling to throw good sparks from a steel, that should be fixable by getting the spine looked at?

I would say yes, and it should be quite a quick fix, I'd be happy to have a look for you, logistics is the problem though eh?

Personally, i wouldn't bother trying to convince yourself of that, I have.

Had a discussion with Stuart via email and have set my heart on a pair of his knives for stalking, just need to make it happen, hopefully in the not too distant future, a kind of 'retirement gift' to myself.
