Second hand 17HMR?

Couple of questions for the more knowledgeable on here!

Considering getting one of these - just to have to be honest, have an itch that I want to scratch!

Do I need to be worried about S/H guns being shot out? Or are they pretty bomb proof?

Also, any recommendations for budget left handed ones (£3-400)? Seen an Anschutz 1517 and I know Tikka and Savage make lefties in that price range - but just wondering what other options there are that people recommend!

Cheers in advance,

Chris

I have got a nice CZ452 with SAK mod and Nikon scope that I am looking to sell.
Not been shot much - maybe 200-300 rounds since new.
DM me if you want to discuss.

Would have to think on that - at the moment it's currently still at the musing stage, and I'd need to actually check if I could actually fit another scoped rifle😅

Out of interest though, could I ask why you're selling?

I currently have a 22LR that I intend to put down for rabbits, but love the idea of a 17HMR too (after trying one at a pipe range).

I used to shoot quite a few rabbits but the numbers around here are low, so I just don’t take it out much. I also have a 22LR and a 243 so the other two guns sort of overlap with the hmr.
It’s a great little rifle and will knock rabbits over at distance.

Spend a few more £ and get a 16inch tikka t1x, great little rifle for the truck out the window.

I have this in left hand action, cheap to shoot and brilliant for varmints!

I did consider that, but the only S/H ones I've seen are basically double the money that I was planning to spend on this!

Shot one a lot good few years ago , About 15 years ago perhaps? ( a very accurate 452 brand new) . Then i bought a 22 hornet and as a handloader its cheaper to shoot and way better . Very much better at foxes and maximum range in my hands doubled the range window .
Lucky I sold before all the hmr ammo problems started I got more than i paid for the 17 hmr
Std 22LR can be improved by finding some good HV ammo for the 22 lr I like CCI Velocitors and SK high velocity 100 yards is not any issue at all around 150 its still pretty usable on head shots on bunnies. I would not buy another 17HMR personally , there are quite a few better things . I also run the 223 on bunny etc and i can take that to 300 keeping on the brain box and also at short range - it just removes the head , the rest is ok for the table ( handloading the 22 hornet and the 223 ) gives the 22 hornet and 223 rem good economy and accuraccy . The hornet however is the one to get ( so long as we dont loose lead) its a 1-16 twist you see it likes short lead bullets 35-45 grain range

Hi Chris, this is what i would advise you to buy New.
Ive had several cz hmr's from new, if and when i buy again, it will be the Tikka t1x.
Over the last 20 years i've shot thousands of rabbits over several different permissions with the hmr's -----which to me is the best rabbiting gun (point-n-shoot range) ---- although with the new n/v s range finding & ballistic scopes such as the Alpex lrf, and zulus lrf some fac air & .22lr can extend the rabbit shooting range successfully
One of the problems with buying s/h hmr's or centrefire rifles is if they haven't been cleaned after use (particularly if they have been used for night shooting when the air is damp, the carbon that is left in the barrel attracts water in & under it, leave it there and rust will form under it (i learned this myself the hard way)-------i only clean with white sprit followed by a lightly oiled patch ------if the rifle is used.
A rusty barrel doesn't mean that the rifle won't shoot, but not having a rusty barrel in the first place is the way to go.

I was the same I’ve had a 17 hmr slot for years on my ticket kept meaning to get one I went to buy one forgot my ticket was going to go back for it the following Monday went out the next day with a friend to zero his and he had 3 split necks so it put me off again on the Sunday I did a variation at the bss for a 17 centrefire which there wasn’t many about the following weekend walked in to local rfd to see a cz527 traded in that morning in 17 hornet I nearly didn’t buy it but so glad I did it’s cracking little accurate round fairly quite cheap to reload and got to scratch my itch for a 17 ignore the the sighter on the right 5 shot group at 150 yards

Said it many times.
Inspect all 17 HMR BEFORE shooting.
Discard any found with a split neck.

This does not mean HMR is rubbish. Just a little annoying but once done you can shoot with confidence.

Not sure if this is within your budget, but my recommendation would be for a used left-hand Sako P04R Finnfire II or Quad. The Quad would be preferable since you'd be able to buy .22LR, .22WMR, and .17 HM2 barrels to install on it (about a 10-minute task by the owner) as well as the .17 HMR barrel. I wouldn't worry about the barrel of a used .17 HMR being shot out; that is extremely unlikely. I'd guess that a used Sako P04R would run about the same price as an Anschutz 1517, or perhaps a few £s more, but not that much more, and, in my opinion is a superior rifle.

Thanks, think the main issue is finding a left handed offering for any of the options! Us cackhanders ain't that common 🫣🫣

Out of interest, the ones with splits, are you able to go back to the RFD and swap em for good ones 😅😅

It’s a shame the ammo qc has been so bad taken a lot away from a great little calibre I thought when they launched the 17 wsm that would be the refined version but that a complete failure
