Severe diarrhoea in dogs

Antibiotics only if proven pathogen AND very sick animal. It' sbeen shown to make no difference, even with bloody D
Mines stools had traces of blood, I’m not guessing I’m lucky enough my friend is a well known vet in our area.

Ok, but that’s for a damaged gut or , as you say , after surgery.

A dog with the sh!ts may very well not have a damaged gut. Just a dose of the sh!ts.

I’m happy to be corrected but we seem to be expanding the issue here.
Dog has scoots, starve dog 24 hrs then light feed. No ?
Happy to correct you (in a purely academic sense) and it's as hcm1 suggests, the cells of the intesting that are in contact with the food have a very rapid turnover and are killed off quite quickly. The thinking used to be that when damaged, there was less of an absoprtive surface, so anyting in the gut not only didn't get absorbed, but actaully pulled fluid out (osmotic diarrhoea). THis to an extent is true, but it now seems the benefit of sensible feeding for a mid diarrhoea outweighs the disadvantage.

personally, I don't starve myself after a dodgy curry...

I'm taking my dogs to the vets on Tuesday with what seems to be Colitis, hoping for medication to sort out the problem for them. Hopefully the bill won't mean I need medication too.🤓

Sorry meant to come back with an update. She is much better, no more straining and groaning when she goes and not nagging to go out every hour or so with the runs. However, she is still very 'loose' although nothing like as bad as before. Back on her usual food, I think she is slowly getting back to normal - thanks for asking.

I wrote in here about the same problem with my dog a few weeks ago turned out she has allergies to chicken and beef so a complete change of diet and she has been fine ever since.

I’m glad you dog is feeling better, but if she’s still very loose then please don’t let it run on for too long like I did, get a stool sample done and then you’ll know. Once I got my dog wormed properly she was good to go in a week, back on solids so to speak.

Late to the party I know but whenever mine has a bout of the squits that won’t budge I give her a couple of Yudigest and in a couple of days she’s back to normal.
