Short Barrelled 6.5

This might be true on open field or such, but in close proximity of buildings (or other flat surfaces that reflect the sound back), woodland etc. there is a VERY clear difference in mod that is "good enough" and mod that isn't.
Agreed, most of mine is open field or woodland
(many times the only shot) and consecutive shots in different mod designs. Most tests pay no attention to this. I've linked a German test here couple of times, that does admirable job of comparing first shot (IIRC 3 separate results) and consecutive shots
Again agreed but most follow up shots the shooter is either ready in advance or too panicked by the targets reaction if it went wrong to be concentrating on the sound.

I did look into the B&T testing results before settling on them. I also read an awful lot of non fiction about the use of “silencers” by the US Armed forces before I settled on even using one!
Yes I used one in rimfire but with subsonic ammo where it has real uses and benefits!
Eventually it’s a personal choice and I never felt the need to moderate my 1911 built Rigby or my full stocked CZ550 although I did think about it for a while!
I spent a few weeks testing new moderator designs to destruction For someone trying to win an MoD contract it was great fun!
I broke just about everything he made first time around!
Firing.17 Hornet through a mod for .22Rf was an interesting experience to say the least!

Very few with less forward protrusion and they all have significantly larger diameter or the slim ones come with more weight

The chamber isnt as significant as the bore to calibre clearance.
But it is still significant and shown to be in tests

Over barrel Chamber serves two purposes
Gas cooling aids sound attenuation
Balance is the other
I intend this to be in a carbon stock
It’s all very personal choice in my opinion!

I do agree with your points, but to me "my ears hurt" and "my ears don't hurt" is a valid benefit on centerfires. After all, you should prepare for worst conditions not best.

And I've always used faster powders to get the muzzle blast down, when that is of concern (with mod or not).

I have yet to use a mod that hurt my ears when fired but I have serious tinnitus from my service not helped by poor hearing protection and lots of noisy helicopters and plant!
I found on the hill in winter the wind was blowing as loud as the gunshots but in woodland I always figured I could get away with a single shot!
I had an opening doe day where I shot five in about twenty minutes and that tipped the balance!

Short is 18” or less.

20” is now a regular factory offering from several manufacturers.

I recall a few of my old rifles with 26” barrels, seems mad for stalking rifles these days, but man did they balance well with open sights!
