Building .284 - advice sought

I had decided that I would like to build my own custom rifle in .284 calibre. I want to shoot accurately from 600yards onwards, but mainly 1000yards. I do have a .338LapMag and .300Norma barrels for another rifle, but ammo cost is eye wateringly expensive! I have a 6.5 Creedmoor as well but the MOD have banned all 6.5s from all their ranges.

I have found the perfect stock - Alpha Kilo Accord Delta, but can't buy this until I can source a half way decent barrelled action.

I have been offered a complete F Class rifle that ticks most of the boxes, except that I guess it probably doesn't have the facility for a magazine, so may not be suitable for my chosen stock? (Barnard 3 lug action)

I did think about leaving a Wanted ad on here but I haven't made enough posts yet to do that.

Any suggestions on directions I might go would be much appreciated.

What inlet is your chosen stock available in ?
Unless you're chasing Nth degree accuracy in competition, a Tikka T3 action will serve you well.
I have a 284w built on a T3 action, now has circa 1400 rounds through it, which will probably get retired later in the year.

Watching this with interest.
I'm thinking about a .284 shehane...or a 7mm prc all pipedreams currently. But if I sell my .375 h&h it will be the first thing I buy.

Tikka T3X, Remmy 700, Mauser M18, K98 & Howa are the listed footprints

Tikka T3 has a great reputation and a T3 will probably out shoot me ;)

If its for stalking etc any sporting action is good enough.
A sporting sized custom action add to the experience, with extras and personalising/tailoring the build to your needs.

Ive dabbled with 7mm WSM, 284W and on the road towards a 7mm PRC. One of my thoughts is if its easily found factory ammo, or made, you always have back up of components.
I'm aware the 7PRC may not be as accurate as the other mentioned cartridges in the finer details, but I can buy a rifle off the shelf off the shelf if needed

You'll need a long action, so 270, 30-06 etc, except in Tikka it's a simple job to modify/replace the bolt stop to make a short action into a long action.
Bolt face is standard 308 etc (although I know 284 is a couple thou smaller, but it doesn't matter).
Magazine from standard long action cartridge allows a COAL of 3.350, which should easily accommodate running long bullets. I run 184gr Berger LRHT, and they are easily accommodated (just checked), although my rifle uses AICS 30-06 mags.

I guessing targets only at these ranges (steel and paper not sentient)

A Barnard 3 lug would be great (though no repeater functionality)

If you’ve been offered a complete P action and stock then you could simply add a arca or picatinny rail for bipod or buy a suitable forward rest and you’ll be good to go

284 Win is a lovely cartridge and very applicable to these distance

284 Shehane even more so , using 180 hybrids

A T3 would be fine to use if you want repeater

But it would not be a rigid as a dedicated single shot action therefore if you want unltimate accuracy that’s repeatable the single shot is the way to go

In my view

Thanks so much for the replies. I feel I have gained some much needed knowledge.

I have noticed that both of the very similar spec rifles I have been offered, have no muzzle break or even mod on the end and appear not to have a threaded barrel end, unless they have invisible protectors.

Is taking it like a man in the shoulder department the norm with F class shooting?

Not sure if it's regulation in F class, only ever seen them wearing barrel tuners.
What sort of shooting is it you intend to do with a 284, as that will help guide you, as in repeater versus single shot etc ?

Brakes are not allowed in F Class

Some rifles were (are) fitted with tuners so may be threaded

Threading for mod isn’t an issue really on an un threaded barrel

Relatively simple task for any competant rifle smith
