Shortest Silencer

I’m in the market for a new silencer. I’ve got a lovely Oceania Defence that I use on several rifles. The only issue is the length. 155mm in front of the muzzle is too much. especially on a 16” barrel.

I’m looking for something short and fat. So there is still the volume to capture the gasses. I’m probably asking too much but why not.

Calibre wise it’s the usual 6.5 creedmoor and .308 so 46gr of powder being burnt.

And before anyone comments on my choice of description Hiram Maxim invented the rifle silencer not the sound moderator 🤣

Some Sunday discussion….

So far the simple but effective Ase Utra SL5i is the front runner.
T8 as bits fall off I make it shorter...

Your front runner seems to be keeping its pace well. I've had an original S5 now for 20 years + still doing a good job. Yes there are quieter but not as bomb proof.

If you want to keep the same attenuation as OD (assuming Alpine Hunter), I think you need to have 125mm muzzle protrusion. I've used Alpine Hunter, on the other hand I have few SL5i and wouldn't use them with no ear protection (assuming 308 sized cartridges and challenging surroundings). With good design reflex I'd say you can equal OD with 100mm protrusion, but you seem to run into barrel diameter problems.

So is one inch so relevant in rifle length? Especially since OD weighs next to nothing?

My current Oceania is the ratchet model in inconnel. The sound suppression is quite remarkable to be honest. It’s the one I’ve been using for several years. It would be nice to have a shorter profile at times. The inconnel model with muzzle device increases the weight significantly over the alpine. Although the purchase of a. Alpine might be a good call.

So if you want to go for the smallest possible moderator with the least forward protrusion the ATEC Herz H2 can be run with a single baffle making it a silly compact 76mm forward and weigh next to nothing. Obviously you pay a price on performance on this and don’t expect it to be a range time bitch, but for stalking it’s an option. Personally I use it in its full form so 100mm forward but there is always the option to go silly small.

Hardy moderators are also pretty short at just at 80mm forward but they aren’t exacting amazing sound attenuators in my opinion.

H2 is currently only available in Mega format i.e. 64mm diameter. H3 has replaced it.

I have 3pcs H2, in the basic H2-3 form i.e. 3 modules. To get adequate attenuation I use 3 modules in 308 size cartridges, and it adds 150mm forward of muzzle. In 223 I've found that 2 modules are enough, and this on 12.75" barrel AR-15 (for single shot or two at most, no magdumps!). I think I'd run 3 modules even there, but the rifle fits in backpack style soft case, assembled, with 2 modules and not with 3 modules.

Each modules is about 41mm long so you can calculate from that. Both H2 and H3 are specced for max. 23.7mm barrel diameter so won't suit the OP. Have to say, first round attenuation in H2 is very good. And I have no reason not to believe H3 also. Haven't seen any tests or tried it.

I’ve got 4, 2x.25 & 2x30, I’ve never had this issue, may be more to do with your powder/load than the mod!
It’s the same with multiple calibres and barrel lengths. Even with fast for calibre burn rate powder in a 26” barrel.

I am going to ultrasonic clean it and see how long it takes to build up again.

As a side note, with the DPT over barrel mod on the exact same guns with same load, there is no carbon bits falling out and down the barrel.

The DPT has the blast chamber going back over the barrel where as the ASE only has about an inch with no where to direct the gasses but against the first baffle.

Weird, as I say I have 4, I've been using one well over 10 years and I’ve never had the issue, they get a lot of use too.

With the DPT, I'd guess carbon will fall back into the over-barrel section so it makes sense you are less likely to see the same issue.

I have a ase jetz compact pretty small and lightweight
The best mod's going IMHO but they are far from lightweight! the mini CQB is light because its small but when you get to the .25 / .30 version they are big old lumps, worth the weight though, I have 4 Jet Z mods and wouldn't change them.
