So, out pigeon shooting yesterday when i got a right wallop, shoulder and face, never had one before but knew straight away what had happened,
my mate had one once whilst shooting clays but it didnt look as bad as what mine felt like, been shooting shotguns weekly for 20 years,
no idea why it happened or what causes it, another strange thing was the primer was black, looks like a pin hole in it but when i blew in it a couldn't get any air through,
anyone seen a black primer before like this one.

Nor seen one like that before! I had the same thing happen once when I was hide shooting for pigeons with an old Baikal SxS. I was sitting on a stool and the damned thing sat me on the ground! Fortunately I was in the hide on my own so no chance of anyone getting hurt except my pride! ;)

it was a fair old shock:eek:

What gun is it?

I had a o/u Bettinsoli that did this (and also pierced primers).

The double discharge was solved with a thorough clean as old lube in the mechanism had gummed it up causing the barrel selector to stick between both.

The pierced primers required new firing pins.

I had an AYA SXS that would give me the odd double discharge. I worked out that it happened when I was using fairly hefty cartridges. So thereafter I kept the bigger stuff for my Beretta O/U.

its just an old lanber, had it for years for the pigeons, im due an upgrade anyway,
not worth the bother of new pins really, 👍

and funnily enough, i had a couple of shots before just changed the barrel selector over to fire the top barrel first as its an old well used gun and when you open it it always kicks back a bit so cant really load with out holding it open for the bottom barrel,

being a pigeon only gun its always had 30 or 32gr cartridges through it,👍

I got one of the new ATA pro 12 comps at the beginning of this year,

Took it over to Braidwood in Selkirk and had multiple double discharges where both barrels went off as one, huge puff of smoke and brass embedded into the barrels and action

Sent it back and the distributor said they replaced everything within the trigger/firing assembly but I’d lost confidence and traded it back where it came from

My shoulder still hurts when it rains. Have since been shooting a browning b525xs laminate with no issues.

I’m not aware what gun you experienced this with and I am sure not all ATA have this behaviour but seems relevant to mentioned to make/model in this case

A friend had a Franchi over/under that prone to double discharges. It was a light gun and gave a couple of us a right belter before he got it fixed.

I had a Somerton 16 bore side by side, single trigger pair of self-openers that one gun of the pair would do this. Two ounces of lead was a fairly noticeable kill on a clay pigeon. It went off to be sorted and came back with the problem never to occur again.

Single trigger guns are often thought as the most likely to do this. But I have had a double trigger side by side hammer gun that also would have likely done it. The sear and bent being worn being the cause.

IT IS WHY I TEST A NEW TO ME USED GUN BY INITIALLY LOADING AND FIRING ONE BARREL AT A TIME.

My Drilling initially doubled and a worn sear was identified as the culprit. A bit of careful filing by a skilled gunsmith fixed the problem.

Nasty and guaranteed to encourage doubt and flinch.
On a goose trip two years ago a pal’s son had a Chiappa triple barrel - super, great, fantastic until he had a triple discharge - funny thing was that in the volley of it and four semis letting fly at a skein no-one except him noticed but do you know what deathly white looks like children?
Ol’ Foxyboy does…..

I have an old BSA sbs 12 bore.
Sometimes when I pull the trigger nothing happens.
Sometimes I get one bang.
Sometimes I get two bangs.
You get used to these little idiosyncrasies.

My first 12 bore was a Belgian hammer gun. The sear on the right hammer was so worn that I had to "fan" the hammer, sometimes, if the left hammer was cocked, both would go off together. It was a wreck, but as it was my first "big" gun, I was very proud of it.
