Thousands more people die from knife wounds than crossbow wounds. Statistics demonstrate that knives whether butcher, pocket, sheath or kitchen kill thousands every year.

Exactly.

And strangely, but statistically true, more people are run over, and killed by cars, and trucks, than are run over, and killed by snow ploughs 🤔

I think it’s fair to say, that nigh on every house/kitchen on the planet, will have some form of knife in it, crossbows, not so much 😉

I struggle to understand the argument, that inanimate objects don’t kill people, therefore anyone should have open access to them !

Just where would you draw the line on that line of thinking ? Or is there no line ?

Just as a point, I voted against banning, but I believe where possible, we should control certain things.

what if he was carrying a woodturning chisel, or a scalpel or a sickle. not used by many people for fun all could be put on license. ive never turned wood and as i can buy everything off line from abroad wood turning should definatly be banned. scalpels have no place out side of a hospital or vets, they should be chained in place like pens in banks. sickle my god you could have your own eye out, banned now.
i feel safer already

Blow pipes are banned due to the ability to use drug darts, so restricted under s5 I believe.
Quite right. Prohibited under s5 (1) (b). Zoos, deer parks, wildlife parks etc. use them for close range work - easier than using a specialist “firearm” to deliver the dose, so they told me

I’m sure there was a recent dangerous weapons bill, including blowpipes and certain swords. Maybe not, or possibly it cleaned up previous legislation 🤷🏻‍♂️?

In any event, we licence crossbow why not compound bows, and recurves, and longbows. Can’t hunt with them either. Like I say, turkeys voting for Christmas.

I’m confused, if they‘re out there and not causing any harm what’s the problem?
And if theres not that many of them out there to begin with, what will a ban achieve?.
We have them on a “ restricted weapon” ticket which has 2 big effects, firstly theres very few about legally and they’re impossible to sell on, and secondly when some kid is caught playing with one of those little pistol hobbies with the plastic bolts the Gards can either chose to ignore it or hand out the hard smacks by initiating a criminal charge under legislation primarily designed to deal with terrorists and with correspondingly stiff sentences.
Not a great choice when applied to a 12 - 18 year old and otherwise blameless youth.

Not heard that argument, though around my area at the time it was becoming increasingly difficult to nip out for a pint of milk & a fresh loaf of wholemeal without roving bands of pygmy's peppering you in the arse from 80 feet away with poison darts...

Upside of a crossbow ban is that not many people will be affected so there won’t be much of a protest.
Another upside is that while the new law will have virtually zero effect on crime statistics, that’s not zero effect and there’ll have to be a buyback or surrender scheme, which will in turn require resources and monitoring, so it will generate a number of decent photo ops and seem to achieve something we didn’t know that we needed until the government showed us the error of our ways.
And all this for free, since the saps will be paying for it themselves.

I wonder if the ancient law requiring an Englishman to practice thrice weekly with his longbow still applies ?

You cant legislate against bows/crossbows/ compound stuff just add them to any legislation about carrying offensive weapons in a public place. Its not as though you can stuff them down a trouser leg - like a knife.
