Hi, can a mod advise.

Can reply to threads under Introductions but not on item for sale.
Can I ask why.
Thanks

You need 30 proper posts to sell on here and perhaps to buy also. Saying "Hi from the Orkneys" doesn't cut it. Proper participation is required.

Are you wanting to sell or just reply to a for sale add?
As above, if you want to sell, its one month on the site and 30 meaningful posts

I wasn't aware of not being able to reply to an add, unless you have been put on the naughty step for post boosting?

4) Membership Requirements

All members have to give a brief overview of what they do in the Introductions forum.

You need to have been registered for 30 days and have made 30 relevant, genuine messages/posts in order to create an advert (or reply to Wanted adverts) in the Classifieds or Opportunities section. This is because Classifieds and Opportunities is a free service provided for our members. We want it to benefit active members who take part in the main part of the forum and not by people who just want to use the site as a free “For Sale” page. We also want to filter out scammers and most of them can't be bothered to fulfill the requirements to post.

Please note:
  • It can take up to 1 hour after the above requirements have been met before the system automatically updates your account to allow you to post in Classifieds/Opportunities.
  • Post Count Boosting - Posting a few words like "nice deer 👍" or "welcome" or “bump” etc. or posting replies in Classifieds multiple times in order to get your post count up to 30 will be seen as evasion. These posts will be removed, your access to Classifieds/Opportunities will be lost and your account may be suspended.
  • Trade Members do not have to satisfy the above requirements because their subscription has by definition demonstrated a commitment to the site.
  • If you post in Classifieds/Opportunities please realise that when the threads are removed (either automatically or by members) your post count will go down accordingly.
  • Please fill in an approximate Location e.g. county or city (in addition to your country) in your profile so buyers know where the item is located.

The number of threads (Adverts) in Classifieds has been capped like so:
  • Trade Member: unlimited threads/posts
  • Supporter: 10 threads per 30 days, unlimited posts
  • Full member: 3 threads per 30 days, unlimited posts

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. I understand about not being able to sell items until the criteria was met, was just surprised that you cannot reply in the thread.

As for "Hi from Orkney" when welcoming a new member, not sure what is expected.

Saying "Hi from the Orkneys" doesn't cut it.

Saying "Hi" from anywhere doesn't cut it.

There should be a limit on how many times you can "Welcome" anyone to the site...

Well this just leads me to think I may qualify for this diagnosis....

@doigan

I would not give it too much thought.

My own dislike of folk "Welcoming" others, is well documented - it just clogs up the site.

Stick with it, (it is worth it) you will soon rack up the required "relevant" posts.

What happened to your site supporter icon as you championed it for a long time?

I have the same restriction. It is not a big deal unless you want to buy something so it probably only affects the members who can post things for sale. (unless you joined only to sell stuff).
I get the point with asking new members to give a brief introduction but a bit baffled for then being discouraged from welcoming them.

No, you've misunderstood.
There's no discouragement from welcoming new folk. It's a nice thing to do. It's just that repeated "welcome" posts won't count towards your target of 30 meaningful posts. Otherwise people would just go straight to the intro section, post "welcome" to the last 30 new members, and expect site privileges. But they're hardly what you'd call "meaningful" posts.

To be clear.

I dislike the "Welcome" from....(fill in wherever you like).

This is not my site, and consequently not my rules.

You can (everyone can) 'Welcome" everyone from anywhere, all day every day.

However, this "Welcome" facility is often abused by many, who try and use it to boost their "post count", in order that they hit the 'magic' number.

It adds nothing (personal view) of value to the site.

Now if you will forgive me, I need to get off this...

Sorry guys, didn't mean to open a **** can of worms. I should have just read the bloody site rules. It clearly states their about 30 posts, was a bit unsure what "meaningful" means though.

I assume that replies to ongoing posts count? Or will it only be 30 new threads created by a member?

I understand the reasoning and agree with it. I don't know the situation with the OP and can only comment from my own experience.

Ask something like, ‘which rifle should I buy?” or “what’s better, 6.5 x 55, 6.5 creedmoor or .260?”

Those sorts of threads go down really well 😉
