Smitten by rimfire

I've gone and done it again! Applied for a 22LR, placed the order yesterday for a CZ Varmint 457 16" in synthetic stock. Same as my 17hmr so will have a set of "Terrible twins" 🤣

Opting for the Sak mod this time. Regards a scope, looking at the DNT Zulus V2, just trying to decide on which one the zhd520 or the zhd312. Though the 520 is winning slightly at the moment.

If anyone has tried both on a rimfire or even looked through both then I'd like to hear your thoughts. Unfortunately my local gunshop doesn't currently stock them but can order my choosen option in for me.

If it's for a rimfire. I'd say the 520 version
Watched a few YouTube videos and the 520 does look shaper on full mag. The only benifit I can find with the 312 is the wider field of view which may be beneficial if using the scope for scanning around but I'd rather a crisp clear magnified kill zone.

Gotta ask, why the varmint barrel?
You expecting it to get hot and walk it's shots or something?
Mostly its a personal choice as I like the heavy barrel and part is driven by feedback from the little research I done. From what I've read the heavy barrel is meant to be less ammo fussy and apparently offers better accuracy over longer distances with slightly better harmonics than the lighter barrel. And also as you mentioned heating up.

I’ve just got rid of a SAK. It was ok but to be honest I think the Parker Hale is the best rimfire mod by far

My old one has been away and reblued as I can’t bear to part with it

I'm all for personal choice but not based on blurb read.
My experience on the other hand is that a 22 doesn't need a heavy barrel.

Lets agree on the personal choice then as any "blurb" I read was done so after my personal choice and not really a deciding factor.

I would go for normal barrel in a hunting gun. Depends what you want to do. That being said the 16 bull barrel isn't exactly a beast. Nice and handy. Should be good.

Everything that burns generates heat.
I think his point is the 22lr doesn't generate that much heat. My 452 you can chuck rounds down the range with the sporter barrel and it's cold. 17 hmr will warm up the heavy barrel at the range if your sending a few shots down. Centre fires are a whole different kettle of fish with light barrels, of course.

Using the ballistic calculator feature with my .17HMR fitted with the Zulus V2 520. 5 shots off the sticks at 20, 30, 40, 60 and 80m. The last shot at 80 was the flyer.

You are wasting your breath SD.
I tried to tell my nephew. He got seduced by a stainless CZ heavy barrel with a laminate thumbhole stock.. the gunshop knew he liked a bit of "Bling"
He rarely bothers to take it out for long... It's too heavy

Heavy barrel = range work or long range varmint hunting from the comfort of a nice 4x4x4.

PS, I hope the dog is doing well ;)
