So why is it…..

Yes, I know but the original lacquer (?) finish was both distressed and distressing so had to go…..
The rubber buttplates are indeed a waste of space and the original steel shoulder-busters are firmly back in their rightful place as I am assured my shoulder will be in only a few months……..

I meant more about the addition of optics, but hopefully you haven’t drilled into those old ladies. Big thumbs up on the woodwork you’ve done a great job on those and they look fantastic!

The 91/30 is amazing, crude and often showing signs of neglect yet they do very well. One of my friends has a 91/30 PU that shoots under 1.5 inches with 5 shots at 100 yards standard factory ball ammo. He is also a fan of all things SMLE, had I not met this fellow my thought toward both rifles would be severely prejudiced by what was read in the 70's- and 80's-gun press. I guess that means it's better to experience then form opinions.
I have a couple of 91/30 PU models , there's a picture of them on here somewhere . Both will shoot under one MOA with decent ammo . They still sell for considerably less than any contemporary WW2 sniper rifle and they will often out shoot most of them . I had a Minty Factory 11 Polish M44 that would shoot 5 round 1 to 1.5 MOA groups with iron sights , probably right up there with the Finish reworks for accuracy . I haven't been without at least one Mosin Nagant variant or another for over 40 years , the same applies to Lee Enfields . As a matter of fact , I shot a little button buck White-Tail last week with a Longbranch No 4 . You could say I have a thing for the old milsurps .

Lord no! The M44 has a Brassstacker mount which fits on top of the rear sight and lets you see the iron sights underneath it and the 91/30 iron rear sight has simply been tapped off revealing an 11 mil. dovetail so a scope with conventional mounts fits straight on top.
No mosins have been damaged in this thread!

What’s not to love! Range days with modern rifles and scopes are dreary and really boring - then bring out the old girls and the sun comes out and big grins appear….
