So why shoot foxes?

Following on from Post 21 :

I shot 6 in the last couple of weeks so that would make 42 foxes for the funeral then .....now wouldn't that be a fun with the rifle:D

Now there's an Idea, wonder what would be on the Buffet Menu.

Perhaps Chicken & Lamb Pate !!!!!!!

Ah uncle buck ive seen those pictures before , do ya keep a terrier or 2

No I'm afraid not Trouble, though I have known one or two Terrier men. As for the pictures I would say they put the

point across rather well with regards to CHARLIE !!!

It depends a lot on the wishes of the land owner. I don't shoot all the foxes I see, I actually quite admire them.

Having said that I was out stalking earlier and happened to bump into one. Land owner says gone and it was so - with the .338WM! The little bugger still ran 10 yards or so which truely amazed me.
The fact it carried on, was more likely due to the equipment being used on it, rather than any desire to keep going!

well my permission did not want any foxes shooting, till last week when they did all his chickens in (12)got my 1st on wednesday but saw 5 in 5 mins in 1 field so plenty to go at:D stav

the thing is you want to kill them first time you see them , next time they will be educated and more spread out if youve killed her , the dog will know the score and bark them way from you . Best plan is wait till most the crops off then get out early and stay out till you have the lot , shooting one now and then works against you as their educated

For me & a buddy, the educated ones, ( those that Mr Farmer has warmed up with his shotgun), are the most trying, sporting adversary................. as experienced once again last night, late into the night sitting for our wily friend, I heard barking in the distance, shortly followed by a distant report of Mikes rifle, radio message, cub down, a few minutes later up the mountain comes Dad, followed by a clusterf**k on my part , as I was static with a car battery & a short lamp lead, having moved a little too far forward with the sticks, & pop , off come the croc clips , with the attendant noise!!! & instant blackout!, by the time I had restored order, those truck like headlamp reflections were on the skyline & in a no shoot condition, Ah well!, you can't be perfect all the time! Now this guy is going to be hard work, Bring it on!

I just have a bit of a blitz on foxes in the run up to lambing time. Other than that tend to leave them alone unless one individual is getting too cheeky, like hanging around close to the yard.

Have yet to ever see the Foxes disappear, they are a resilient predator and make for good sport with the rifle.

Even if you manage to shoot everyone you see, there will still be some left to cock a leg, and **** on your gravestone!!

I shoot them because we have 60'000geese and 50'000ducks outside in pens and at christmas the geese are worth £50each so a fox killing 20 a night has a price on its head.

bornfree

Is that a bad thing?

The main reason we need to cull deer on our island is because we have no natural predators. The fox is indeed a natural predator of young deer. Are we helping him, or is he helping us?:???:
He is the 'natural' predator and should surely take priority over us?
Game shoots are an unatural occurance and are difficult to justify in the eyes of the anti's. They are also fox 'breakfast bars' and half the reason why the fox population is so high in the first place!
Foxes also eat rats, squirrels, voles, mice, etc....
If you take the time to watch one up close, they are beautiful creatures and definitely have their place in the countryside. if you would like to see them eradicated, then you are no better than our predecessors who killed all the wolves, cats, bears, etc...
I shoot foxes on some of my estates, but leave them on others where I see they are doing good. I suppose that makes me some kind of hypocrite, but I personally wouldn't want to see the extinction of one of our largest and most beautifully cunning mammals. Would you really like to be responsible for their permanent demise??????
If so, then you should probably remove your head from yer arse and review the bigger picture!;)

spot on

View attachment 8207P5310101.webpthis is why ,poor thing .i had been cleaning feeders and drinkers on and off today in our shoot room not 30 yrds from home popping back and forth when i got fed up ,i hate this particular job ,i had seen a cub at my kebab last night but the sheep chased it off so tonight i was going to be ready and the sheep were gone !at about 8pm i was finished so got the dogs in the boot room and got the 22.250 out of the cabinet ,loaded up and put the gun on the table ready .just going to pop the kettle on and there was this poor dog fox on the kebab ,so i gently eased the door open and ended his miserable life :smug:

Good post, kind of sums it up for me. Shoot them if I have to but have no problem leaving them be, Have never understood some of my friends' pathalogical hatred of them.

anybody who wants to see the eradication of anything (exceptions being grey squirrels and signal crayfish) doesnt deserve to have a firearm or even a catapult. Foxes are beautiful creatures but owing to our own meddling with the ecosystem (the human race is the biggest parasite on earth) we have to control them. I wouldn't personally even like to see rats eradicated because after all we have thrown at them they still bounce back and they have their place.

One of my farmers wanted me to get rid of the foxes, but after watching a vixen playing in the sun with her cubs, changed his mind and said that the odd lamb/sheep was an OK price to pay.
Wait until lambing time comes round again and I bet his story will change.
