Some say....

The one I used in the opening photo?
30-30.
I've head shot a lot of Ruffed , Spruce and Sharptailed grouse with lead round balls out of various 45/70s and 458WMs over the years . Nice and quiet , and six or seven cartridges weigh a lot less than a shotgun . Something to consider when you're a two day walk from your vehicle .

Woodcock stalking, now there's a challenge 😂
There struggling a bit here with the ground being frosted, but it would be very easy here... just head out before sunset 50+ in each field the amount we see while lamping for foxes is crazy...

Yeah sure I meant in day light in the woods as a joke. Finding one in their camo before they lift for a rifle shot is near impossible.
I wouldn't dream of taking them at night on the ground although when I was younger I remember seeing some arrive after their long journey. In the lamp they would kind of crash land and we're so tired I could pick them up. I bet foxes take a few that time of year.
One night I was looking at I had just picked when my friend whispers fox! So I put the wood pack in my coat pocket and we go to get the fox.
When we were done I put my hand in my pocket to release the woodcock only to find my pocket full of woodcock poop!
I often wonder what that bird use to tell others!

On another occasion I was waiting by a stream for a fox one winters afternoon when it started to snow. Heavily!
Woodcock appeared from nowhere dibbing in the stream. They had disputes, chasing and wing flapping. Tail flapping. It was a truly magical moment. Then the fox came!

For sure I think shooting gamebirds at night Is actually Illegal, but If you set up during sunset and scanned around you would maybe be lucky before It got to dark (I think lamp Is also illegal?)
.
Ever since I was told they get blinded In a lamp/headlights Its been my mission to pick one up, There wonderful little birds, Also would be a very funny photo to send to my parents who arent outdoors people at all...
Had a mouse thrown on me a few weeks back, Both my friends were baffled when I picked it up and just looked at it!
