Spikes?

Perhaps a couple of years ago we took our young Border to the vet. because we thought she was having some kind of fits. (Body goes stiff with back legs stretched out, mouth open and panting.) she seems to know when it’s about to happen because wherever you are she makes a beeline for you to get near.
Vet. said very possible but scans would be need to maybe find out, or leave her and she might grow out of them.
We decided to wait and see.
Over time she’s had a very few episodes but recently they’ve been more regular so we keep a record of when and how long they last.
She had one on Sunday so we took her to the Vet. on Monday.
Same practise but different Vet. who examined Belle and asked a few questions about diet etc. And almost immediately suspected Spikes….i’d never heard of Spikes but apparently a wheat/ Gluten free diet is recommended.
Some recommendations wanted as to which dawg (No, we don’t keep it in the fridge 😉) food to feed her.
In the meantime a Wifey has ordered some James Wellbeloved to try.
Thanks, Ken.

Sorry to hear that
We have a 10 year old border terrier and have had the same off and on.
She is obviously in pain and stretching and you can hear all sorts of gurgling insides sometimes

My wife found out about spikes and the vet agrees but had no idea beforehand

For us usually associated with stress. In her case fireworks night and the run up to New Year usually kick it off and it can take a month or two for her to sort out again

It is hard to tell if she feels bad from spikes and goes off her food or the not eating causes the issues to kick off and then she won't eat but it seems that until she starts eating regularly again it doesn't sort itself out

She often used to eat bread and pasta and it didn't cause any issues so gluten isn't a cause
(You can try that yourself)

When she is sick we need to really encourage her to eat as she obviously doesn't want to

We have semi dry kibble from arden Grange
And freeze dried beef sprinkles (coya)
Or yogurt and carrots which she likes

We have tried omeprazole (antacid treatment ) which might help but it is hard to say as it comes and goes

Vet I took my WHV to diagnosed it immediately. Not seen it in anything other than border terriers before - quite common with them it seems

I now feed him on beta wheat free. In 2 years only had one episode now

If raw is an option at all I can recommend Bella & Duke. We buy it in 500g sealed tubs and it arrives frozen. We have a dedicated dog food freezer in a porch which makes life easier, and just take out what we need the day before. Our two thrive on it
