Spotting scope recommendations

Define reasonably cheap.

Does a reasonably cheap rifle and scope reach out that far? Not a sniper or target shooter myself, hence the Q.

Guessing it’s not .222 holes you’re looking to spot either!

What I mean by reasonably cheap, is something that isn't Swarovski sort of price.

Also I'm not actually sure of what power I should be looking at magnification wise to be able to see strikes at that distance.

I never mentioned a cheap rifle or scope set up.
Most of my shooting is under 250 yards on deer and fox, but I would like to do a bit of shooting at range with my 6.5PRC

Go onto the birdwatching forum

and look for an Opticron with a fixed HDF eyepiece.

I went on the site, spoke to a few site users about what I was after and they recommended the above.

So waited a bit and then got a hr66 with a x28 eyepiece for around £200. Got a case cover for another £30. Opticron lenses and eyepieces are Japanese made despite being a UK based company.

I use mine for up to 650 m on steel, but have recently sourced a zoom eyepiece to take me out to 1500m for a trip to Wales in July.

Beyond 35x magnification, most days heat shimmer will make your spotting of the bullet hole not too easy.

Resolution capabilities of the glass will be your friend, and even used Swarovski spotters are capable of delivering, also Kowa, Leica and Zeiss. Best ask other long range guys what works for them, though.

Hawke ED glass pretty good
Vortex same
As long as ED glass should he fine
Dont rule out 2nd hand
You could have decent brand for less money / high end etc

Unless you go high end once past 500 600 use i personally struggle to ssee holes but we do steel gongs various sizes once past 400yd and out to the mile ... I have an opticron.. and I can see gong strikes oe bullets splashes round targets to help spot for shooter .... as with any glass pish your budget get best you can

A kowa 664 ED will comfortably spot 30-06 at 500 metres with the 30x eyepiece, assuming decent conditions and a steady tripod.

Beyond this and it is possible but a challenge, you would be straining etc.

You need a zoom for more detail or bigger aperture. Steadiness is important for resolution so ideally you would be sheltered from wind as this makes things frustrating even with a good tripod.

I would be looking at cctv cam with a pay as you go sim..seeing bullet holes st 500 + in anything like warm weather will be difficult at the mag your going to need.
I could see bullet holes in a target 260 miles away from.my phone via cctv costing £50.

This is an image from.a Vortex Razor HD at 1200mtr. The weather was comfortable, dry and a gentle breeze. Mag would be about 32x.

Not a bad idea at all. Thanks
