Squirrel numbers / litters

Out today, see quite a number of very very small squirrels, looks like they’ve a good breeding year, anyone else noticed an increase

Numbers much same as usual here ,Bucks/Northants, some obviously this year's youngsters but no late litters .
We are very strict with the little darlings though,trap throughout the year in the woods, shot on sight everywhere.

Not a one here to be seen of any age, pine martens have eaten them all

Yes lots of smaller/scrawny one about, just makes it that little bit harder when your zeroing in on them (but not to much) if I’m honest.

I just put a feeder up a week ago with a view to selling a bit of squirreling to air gunners jeez the little basturds have eaten 3 kilos of peanuts and discabooberated the feeder.
So looks like i shall be spending a fair bit of time in the hides i built!

try using maize as a bait, I have just bought 20kg to try as it is supposed to be liked by squirrels, but its a lot cheaper than peanuts.

Cut maize makes them work harder and stick around for longer.

Lots of small ones here too. Good idea about the maize - I've heard they go along the rows, digging it up after drilling.

Seems to be a never ending flow here. Load the feeders with peanuts leave for 4 days and then hit them. Got three large woods with feeders. They still seem to be hitting them hard even on one pheasant shoot where there is plenty of other food. Seems to work leaving for a couple of weeks in between. with little contact apart from topping feeders. Have one other wood to set up in coming weeks when I have time
