Squirrel shooting

I eat squirrels by jointing them into five pieces (four legs, one saddle) then wrap each piece in bacon and grill. Five minutes one side, turn and ten minutes other side, then turn for five minutes back to the first (five minute) side. The old Guns and Ammo magazines of the 1970s used to have a back cover advertisement for Savage .22 rifles that had many many squirrel recipes. Many think that all Americans are wealthy. Some aren't and squirrel was a welcome source of "free" meat once upon a time with the bonus of improving marksmanship skills across a cohort most likely to be be first to rally to the colours in war.

A good days decoying pigeon is fine sport if you can get it. A wander with a rifle with a good chance of a deer to drag home is better still, but nothing, simply nothing is more of a days sport than a days squirrelling in well populated woodland using a decent air rifle :) It's the one aspect of shooting I miss these days as I no longer have access to the many scores of acres of predominantly beech and sweet chestnut woodland that I once had. You can keep all the pheasant shooting in the world as far as I'm concerned as I think it would be as sporting if you hade a guy throwing chickens into the air from behind a wall, but I'd fight King Kong for a hundred acres of sweet chestnut woodland.

There's a squirrel recently moved in to live in the spinney I walk the dog to most days. I've seen it a few times now. Never seen more than the one and I'm not of a mind to shoot it, but Oh how I wish it hade a few dozen mates !

If you're simply looking to get on top of the numbers, a feeder baited with peanuts would be my best advice. Build a hide and get there before first light and wait. A good air rifle or a .22 rimmy (if you have the backstop) will do the job nicely.

Thanks for all the tips:
Was out today with 20b and two of us - shot 17 and saw many more!

Definitely a return trip over the next week…….
My youngest and I were out today and shot a total of x18 between us using 12b and thermal. Came home with a trailer full of firewood and left a very pleased landowner behind.

Look at the " Christmas Crackers" on that one?

Can i ask what the can on the side is for?
Holds a tub of Aldi's finest peanut butter.
Lid screwed onto the side of the feeder with 2 screws, you then cut out the base of the PNB pot and screw it onto the lid.
A bean can with the ends removed and split down the side then placed over the PNB pot ensures the squirrel can't destroy the pot, but it feeds readily from it.

I have set up a squirrel feeder today within air rifle range of one of my high seats.
The food is whole maize.
Sort of a Christmas present but with ties..
The first part of my Boxing day sport today.
Squirrels had found the feeder after not many days and i filled it up again Christmas Eve.
So i got there at first light with the Air Arms S400 in 177 cal.
I only saw a couple but 2 shots fired and 2 culled.

The second part of my Boxing day sport was a session in the same wood with my female Harris Hawk Jessie.
She was on good form again and whilst she narrowly missed a couple of pheasants she had her first Woodcock of the season to which i let her tuck in on it.
(Her previous two flying sessions resulted in 1 rabbit and 2 hen pheasants, so her own freezer is filling up!)

Out with the 308 in the morning.
This Sporting life..

Thanks mate i will give that one a go on my feeders.

How many days does it take the sodding squirrels to realise there is free food? I put the feeder out 3 days ago and left nuts on the post. They favent figured it out yet. Nuts are still there on the post..

Indeed, until banned by the very arrogant Seamonster for doubting a moderators response to a query l made.
