Bit of a long shot but does anyone have the postal address for Staffordshire firearms department.
I'm trying to send my licence and paperwork off for a variation.
Can't find anything on the website and I think you've got more chance of getting hold of the Queen than you have these on the phone

Have they actually said that or have you just read it from the form which is usually out of date of current working practices in many force areas.

I would just submit the online application along with an email saying that you will retain the existing paper certificate until the amended certificate is received when you will then send the certificate to them, unless that is they specifically ask for it to be returned. That's the way it works in my force area.
