Stalking Etiquette

Things not to do post-shot:
Blow away the emerging smoke from the muzzle of your rifle, like Jack Palance.
Punch the air.
Shout ye-ha, get some, right on, hot diggedy, or god damn!
High five all around you.
Belly bump the guide.
Explain to everyone how this animal stood no chance against a man of your talents.

On approaching the beast:
Run up to the animal with the loaded rifle in one hand, shouting "Look at the mass on that"
Grab whatever it has on its head and spin it round, asking if it will make the record book or win a medal.
Imagine you're on the shrinks couch and recount all of your feelings since potty training.
Put any part of your Hi Vis clothing on the animal for the photo shoot.

On a positive note, at some point, I put my hand a the beast and say "thank you".
My dear chap….these are compulsory! Especially the belly bump….

One other thing. Dont walk behind the guide with a bloody thermal constantly strapped to your eye like captain Pugwash. Walking into the the back of the guide or suddenly realising you are now 60 yds behind the guide who has spotted a group of Fallow in dense woodland and is waiting for you to put your sticks up, only to find you still standing there like a statue. Then moving forward to spook the entire group of deer .

I would like a Fiver for all the times I have had that happen.

Fair point Malc, have you one of these new fangled devices yet or still on the Mk1 eyeball?

I am happy to report that I purchased one from Gregor Macleods at a discounted price some 3 years back, whilst in Scotland. So I have turned to the dark side!! Useful at the right times, especially early morning in thick woodland on Fallow.
However we still seem to have those stalkers who use it in broad daylight, and constantly walk around with it stuck to their eye. Hot tree's, rocks and old bits pf discarded farm machinery sometimes convince some that its a deer .

They have their place. But use your binoculars.

Ah ha....are you a both eyes open using one or one eye closed?

Be honest about your abilities. Ask questions if your unsure, most of us will happily answer your questions. We’ve all been novices

You are going stalking it's not a FAC interview
Unless you’re a gorgeous 20 year old blond lass, biscuits are a necessity.

Don’t forget the old ghillies tale about asking the Laird wether he wants the client to get deer, to see deer or just go for a stalk? Biscuits could well be the deciding factor

This is why I stalk alone no cash/biscuits/shot fee/miss fee/shooting deer and carrying without checking the first one or any of the other bolicks suggestions since the start of the thread...any one would think it is dress code at Ascot lol

Much more serious than that.lol

Thank you
A wise man told me once you have 2 ears and 1 mouth used in that proportion and you will find life easier
You reminded me of a few lines I once read;

The wise old owl who sat in the oak,
The more he heard the less he spoke,
The less he spoke the more he heard,
Now wasn't he a wise old bird.

I saw a version of that recently, except that the last line read:
"Now why can't we be like that old bird?"

I thought it very good advice.

If you are Lucky enough to have been invited stalking don't take the **** and go behind the stalkers back in an attempt to steal the permission. This really goes before saying (and I am not thinking that the OP will...) but has to be mentioned as many still lack the basic respect.
This is the big one Parrasites that know your on the ground yet do everything to steel it. ENVY in the stalking world is massive.

Hi David B
That only has to be found the one time, then the door closes, bit of a shame really, really sours the whole thing of how I gained shooting experience by people willing to show you the ropes, ok that was a fair year or two ago, but until recently that was how I operated, post a few disloyal or downright scallywags and non show, although I don’t like it at all, the gate is now firmly shut now, which is against all i like to do to help with a leg up, I had one bit of ground I had cleared just for a 22 rimmy to allow a air gunner and get him a foot on the fac ladder, as a shared permission got a phone call from the area police what i am I up to putting in for a 223 and 308 on land just cleared for 22 rimmy, you couldn’t make it up - it’s no wonder people are closing ranks, which for me is a real shame, but as per the old saying - you earn you got it
